I awoke just like I do every day. Get out of bed and let the maids tend to my every need. It was a life of luxury. Which I took advantage of. I was selfish at moments, and I came off as rude and unbearable. Yet deep down I will always put everyone else before myself.

The sun lit up my entire room as if it was to glare at me. I sneered back at it before stepping into my closet. I decided to wear something simpler today. And by simple, I mean slacks and a tank top. My life was incredibly boring. A constant cycle of repetition, never anything new. I stepped out into the long corridor and headed towards the dining room. My flats slapped against the marble floors and echoed in the deafening silence that always filled the castle.

We didn't speak much. My parents hardly said two words to me my entire life. I was only born in order to take over the kingdom when I was needed. And God, were my parents disappointed I was a girl. They tried and tried for another kid but failed every time. I was just their constant reminder of a mistake. I was nobody.

I sat alone at the head of the table as usual before a butler scurried in. Without even lifting his head to look at me, he bowed shakily and put the dish in front of me before hurrying away. Light leaked through the stained-glass mural and poured an array of colors all over the shiny, wooden floor. The mural was something my mother had uniquely made before I was born. It was a picture of her and my father, holding their unborn child. My father held a long sword, the sword that has been passed down each line of royalty. My mother held me, a faceless bundle of blankets and cloth. Both held a serious expression, their mouths set in a straight line.

It was to represent the bravery of our kingdom. Although I never understood it much. How can a kingdom be brave if the King and Queen are cowards who hide away in the shadows? I lifted the lid of the food placed in front of me to see two freshly made biscuits and some scrambled eggs. As I ate the bland meal, the only sound heard was the clanking of my fork against my mother's beloved China plate. I yawned as I played with the food for a second, before tossing the fork and standing up.

I get bored very easily and today wasn't any different. My head whipped around as I heard the sound of heels clicking against the floorboards. My mother walked into the dining room and stared at me. "Athena," she said before pausing and smacking her lips, "your father wants to see you in his office." Her voice was emotionless, and her face held no expression of a women who loved her child. I've learned over the years that my mother hates conversation. Especially with me. I just nodded before slowly walking towards the gold staircase that wrapped around the main entrance of the castle. My father's office was on the far side of the East tower. It was a long walk, but I quite enjoyed the deadly silence. I knocked gently on the engraved wooden door that led to my father's office.

"Come in." He sounded more restless than usual, and the door creaked as I opened it. "Father." I spoke quietly before bowing. "Athena. Sit."

I obeyed and sat on the opposite side of his desk. "As you know, Facia is in danger." He spoke. Matter-of-factly, I did not know my kingdom was in danger. But then again, no one cares to tell me anything. I just nodded knowing that if I told my father I was unaware, he would call me a stupid scoundrel and send me to my room for the rest of the day.

He nodded in approval before continuing, "Our long-term enemies from Gaiden have decided to strike us a deal." I clasped my hands tightly to my lap. Gaiden was the kingdom across the sea from us. For some reason, my father and the King of Gaiden have had a problem with each other since they were young. I've never asked my father because I knew I wouldn't be able to get anything out of him. "Continue." I spoke.

He glared at me hastily for commanding him to do something but proceeded to speak. "Now, don't get worked up over this." I raised my eyebrows. This can't be good, and I was probably going to get worked up over it.
