Chapter 15: An unexpected encounter

"My! You look amazing in that suit, Detective Sakasaki!" Lui clapped her hands as I stared at myself in the mirror.

A young green-haired man was reflected in the mirror. He was wearing a black suit with a red tie which was simple in design but was expensive thanks to the high quality materials used in making it.

"Did you really have to buy me an expensive suit? I didn't really want to spend a lot of money on clothes", I asked.

"Don't worry. This is all on me. Besides, I can't have you accompany me in the event wearing cheap clothes. I have to keep up my reputation, you know?" Lui winked.

From what I knew, Lui was a very important and respected businesswoman in Miyako. She had lots of stocks in many companies and even invested in popular ones back when they were starting out. Not only did she have assets in Miyako but she also had assets all over Yamato.

The main funds of holoX came from the profits she earned from her investments and it wasn't far off if I were going to say that the main reason why holoX wasn't in the red despite Koyori spending lots of money on research was because of Lui's riches.

We got out of the shop and walked down the streets of Miyako. Many people looked at us as we walked since Lui was wearing an eye-catching red dress while I was wearing an expensive-looking suit.

"To get things straight, I just have to accompany you to a party?" I asked.

"Yes. The son of Nakauchi Corporation's CEO is getting married soon and so, Mr. Murai invited all of his friends to celebrate. I have contributed a lot to Nakauchi Corporation and am a major stockholder so I got invited", she answered.

Nakauchi Corporation was a trading company that focused on the flow of goods between Yamato and the western side of this world. It was a fairly new company as compared to others but it rapidly grew in size thanks to the smart decisions made by its CEO.

"Don't worry. I'm not expecting any fight or danger and even then, I can protect myself", Lui patted my back.

"Then why did you have to bring me along?" I asked.

"A lone lady in a party is a recipe for disaster. With my status, I'm sure there'll be some people who want to get on my good side to get a boost in society. After all, I am a single lady. Many men would try to get my hand and I can't easily shake them off unless I want to ruin my image", she replied.

What she said made sense. From recent studies, at least 70% of the couples in Yamato were a result of arranged marriages. And it wouldn't be surprising if most of them were made because both parties had something to benefit from the marriage. It was rare to find couples who married out of love without caring about the potential pros that came with it.

"Besides, I'm still not interested in trying to settle with a partner. I have my duties to fulfill for Lady Lap and I will make sure to change the world into a better one", she said.

Lui's eyes had a distant look on them. I wondered what kind of memories were playing inside her mind but I decided to not bother questioning them. Whatever reason someone would want to change the world, it must be a good reason that needed no questioning.

"That's a shame then. But it's respectable that a beautiful woman like you also has a righteous heart", I said.

"Oh my, Detective Sakasaki. I didn't expect you to be able to flatter a woman like that", Lui smiled.

"I'm a detective. I don't do flattery. Instead, I always strive to reach the truth no matter how ugly or undesirable it is. But this is one of the times where I don't feel bad for stating the truth that you are a woman worthy of praise."
