Chapter 19: An unsettling suspicion

 Mysta and I were walking down the street. It was fun to be able to work with another detective and thanks to him, the case was easily solved. However, it also meant one thing.

He was a threat.

His deductive reasoning and observational skills were amazing. He could be around my level or higher. If I make the wrong moves, then holoX's secret would get out and things will be more difficult.

After all, it would be a huge deal if the people would know about an influential organization operating things in the dark. I read the previous records of holoX's activities and I was surprised that they helped in covering up lots of scandals and pulling strings to resolve incidents. It was all for the sake of a better world but I had a feeling that some people wouldn't be understanding.

"Man... That sucks", Mysta groaned.

"What's wrong?" I asked.

"Do you remember why I snuck into that party?"

"Yeah. You were talking about investigating the shady deals of Nakauchi Corporation."

"I found a connection between it and a smuggling ring I've been investigating. But with Hideki confessing that his motive for the murder was because Kazushi was blackmailing him about his shady deals, it's also a case closed!"

Ah.

What kind of an idiot was I?? Why did I assume that Mysta was investigating holoX? Even Master Shellin had no idea that holoX existed so it was strange for Mysta to know about us.

I looked at a corner and shook my head. A shadow moved away after seeing my signal.

"What are you doing?" Mysta asked.

"I feel like this job is stressful", I groaned.

"That's being a detective. Or are you saying you're not satisfied being Lui Takane's assistant?"

"I'm fine with being a detective and Lui's assistant although I'm not used to this job yet. Lui said this job has no dangers but I was surprised to see another murder case so soon."

Mysta's eyes glanced at me with an inquisitive look. Ah crap... I gave away too much information. If he would find out that I was involved in another murder case with one of the 21 families and that I accompanied Iroha on a bodyguard mission, Mysta would think that Lui was more than a regular businesswoman.

"You..."

I gulped down and tried to think of any excuses and lies I could use against him.

"... are pretty close with Lui Takane, aren't you? Are you two more than just what you are showing in public?" he asked.

Huh?

"You don't use honorifics in calling her since you're just saying 'Lui.' She doesn't seem the type to let anyone do something like that to her since she is probably trying to keep up a good social image. So why are you that close to her despite being just an assistant?"

... This guy...

His eyes widened and he then smirked while patting my back.

"I wish you a pleasant death, normie", Mysta's smirk turned into a glare.

Yeah. He might be a good detective but he was also an idiot.

"Well... I have no wish to be part of ruining your secret romance with her so I'll just keep my mouth shut. You're lucky that I'm not just a super amazing detective but I'm also an understanding one", he said.

And with that, Mysta walked away. I was glad that his suspicions about holoX were gone but for some reason, I could feel a different problem was rising.
