Chapter 24: Mixed signals

The smell of coffee entered my nose and I realized that someone else was in the room. When I looked up, I saw Lui smiling at me while holding a tray which had a mug.

"It's already late but you look like you're not stopping soon. I thought you'd want to have this", she said.

"Late?"

I looked at the clock and it was already 2 AM. Looks like I got too carried away in investigating again. It wouldn't normally bother me but the circumstances were different this time...

Lui placed the mug on my desk while I continued browsing through the new computer I got. With Koyori's expertise and holoX's funds, I have a new and much more powerful computer that could let me easily access information than the one Master Shellin has.

But even with this upgrade, my investigation was going nowhere.

"Still no luck?" Lui asked.

"No..." I answered.

A few days had already passed after Deus' death and I spent days investigating. However, I couldn't get anything at all.

Back when holoX attacked Mirazushi Corporation's laboratories, they saw a computer and tried to access it. The computer immediately deleted its files when they didn't access it using the proper methods and they most likely sent a signal to the others that someone was in their tails.

"This is impossible. I should change my approach", I said.

"How is it impossible?" Lui asked.

"This computer can hack databases as long as they are somehow reachable via any connection. I can reach a device that has a wireless connection along with the other devices that are connected to it via wireless or wired. The problem is that the information we need is not connected to anything at all so I can't get it."

"So we need to find it ourselves and have Koyori hack it?"

"Most probably. Our enemy is careful. I think Mirazushi Corporation was just a front that could be easily discarded."

"What makes you say that?"

"It took me only a night to find out about their secret. Now, I can't figure out anything. It's like they sacrificed Mirazushi Corporation and let them be exposed so we can be distracted."

"That is a valid argument. I did try to investigate Mirazushi but I couldn't find anything myself. But there's one thing that's been bothering me."

"And that is?"

"I heard from my contacts that there's someone asking about Deus. Of course, I made sure to have Lady Lap wipe the memories of those involved and our tracks are completely covered."

"Is it Mysta Rias? I can imagine him hopping to a mystery like that."

"No... Apparently, he's someone with red metallic arms that are most likely to be prosthetics."

Someone else was investigating it?

I didn't think someone would be interested in Deus unless word got out and they heard of the anti-magic barrier issue. Did someone in the samurai regiment or any related group leak information? But even if they did, it would be difficult for me to narrow down the suspect list and at most, it would just be a rumor. The people whose words have strength were on our side and I doubt they would betray holoX.

"Shall I find out more about that person?" Lui asked.

"Unless they make a significant move, we should focus our manpower on finding out more about Deus while staying hidden", I answered.
