WHEN YOU GOT HOME, the sound of jubilant laughter echoed through the house. There were two voices you could pick out from your sleep, but the other was a softer one you've yet to memorize. The smell of strawberries and a scent that could only be Maddy cemented your theory.
Walking briskly through the living room to the kitchen. You saw your two girls sitting by the table; Maddy held a laughing Mia on her lap. On the other seat nearest to Maddy, Cassie sat. Her stance was a comfortable but guarded one. You only imagined what thoughts were going through the blonde's mind.
Silently you watched the trio exchange stories and laughter, with Mia occasionally asking a question or two. You leaned on the side of the door connecting the living room to the kitchen as you listened in. After a while, you decided that observing as much as you did was rude. So you made your presence known.
Your soft footsteps sounded with each step; suddenly, the trio stopped their conversation and looked toward the source of the sounds. Mia was the first to acknowledge you as she promptly jumped from Maddy's hold and ran towards you.
"Mommy! Mommy!" Mia brought her arms out in front of you, and you smiled before you took the girl and launched her into the air. Whoosh.
Maddy and Cassie's eyes widened as you took a giggling Mia back from the air's grasp. "Y/N!" They both screamed simultaneously; both were so shocked at their unison that Maddy raised an eyebrow, and Cassie coward away.
Maddy walked towards you while Cassie stayed rooted to her sear. The blonde's cheeks tinted with a flush of pink. You smiled at Cassie, trying to elevate some of her embarrassment. You don't need to be embarrassed. You didn't cross a line. You so desperately wanted to voice out, but knowing your wife, she'd freak out over it. Green never really suited Maddy.
Maddy took a reluctant Mia in her arms as she inspected the little girl for possible bruises. "It was just a twirl. She's fine, Madeleine."
Maddy's eyes twitched, and that familiar 'v' returned to her brows. "Please don't do that again, darling." You grimaced at the endearment. It was something you used to call your ex-girlfriend, and Maddy would be fuming when you'd used it on her. Now it seemed she used the term purely to get under your skin.
"No problem, darling." You said as you sat on the chair opposite to Cassie's. There was that familiar feeling of anger and annoyance bubbling inside of you, but you guys weren't alone tonight. There could be no fighting.
No, there was a visitor tonight—a visitor who probably knew all your problems without you having to voice them out. But still, it felt wrong to show the cracks of your marriage to her. You almost felt ashamed that she'd know what a sham of a marriage you had.
When Maddy's gaze met yours, you engaged in a silent standoff. Mia grew restless in Maddy's grasp and wiggled her way out. Cassie sensing the tenseness of the room, said, "Maybe I should go-"
Go. Leave. Run. It seems as though the blonde wasn't the only one who was fond of running away during difficult situations.
With Maddy's gaze still holding yours prisoner, she said without breaking eye contact. "No, please. Stay. I already ordered dinner. Think of it as another thank you for today."
"No, it's fine. I should go. It's late, and it's scary to take the bus later at night—"
Maddy looked and interrupted a rambling Cassie. "No need. Y/N here will take you. Isn't that right, darling?" You thoughtlessly nodded your head, not having a choice.
Your wife sensed your disapproval of her proposal and scoffed. If you only knew the real reason why I prefer to stay away from the blonde. "That was rude of me. You're right. I'll take you." You said with as much false enthusiasm. Even though some parts of you were fuming at the idea of a lengthy ride with the young blonde in an enclosed space, there were indeed parts of you that highly praised the idea.
