I swore and ran after the flyer I had dropped. This wind was driving me crazy. It was quite stormy, but I didn't have time doing this anytime soon again. And I shouldn't waste too much time in hanging those anyways. I held onto the other flyers as tight as I could while chasing the one going lost. "Come back you little –", I grumbled as someone picked it up. I looked up confused and met a pair of amused looking eyes. "Watch your language", the guy opposite me grinned. I was too stunned to speak, so he looked at the flyer and mumbled along while reading: "Searching for a flatmate... Nice apartment near university... Cheap and comfortable..." He locked eyes with me and suddenly held out his hand, continuing to talk: "Hi. I'm Jay. And I'm currently trying to find an apartment around here. I could move in tomorrow." Still a bit puzzled, I just shook his hand before remembering how to form words: "Katy. Thanks for picking that up." I snatched the flyer from him and added: "But I prefer a female flatmate." "I can cook quite good", he gave back and I blinked confused. Okay, I was often too lazy to cook but should that be the only condition? "So what?", I replied. "Come on, I really need something. Promise to move out as soon as I find something else. But I really hate having to drive all the way here every day." I scratched my head. "I'll put up all the flyers for you if you want me gone again or if I find something new", he suggested. I sighed. I needed someone to share the rent with soon. "I guess you can move in for as long as you find something new. But don't think we'll live together for long!"
The next day he moved in. He had brought help along: His cousin. I had ignored my unwillingness of moving in together with a male stranger and instead helped them. They seemed genuinely nice actually and I found myself a bit more relaxed that evening. From suspicion grew friendship and the original plan of having Jay move out soon again got forgotten. We went along well together and before I realized it, I didn't want any other flatmate anyway.
We've been living together for one and a half year now as one day Jay knocked at my door early in the morning. Well, early for him. "Come in", I said and he opened the door, raising his eyebrows as soon as he saw me. "Before you say anything", I began, "I also don't know how that happened. I was just trying to work on my assignment and then motivation decided to leave me, resulting in... this, I guess." I was somewhere between my chair and the floor, holding onto my desk to prevent falling down completely. "Whatever", he sighed and came over to help me onto my chair again, "I know you're clumsy." I shrugged apologetically and thanked him. "Anyway, why are you up already?", I wanted to know. "My cousin recently came back from his student exchange and wanted to visit me for two days. He found an apartment nearby and wants to look at it first. Would that be fine with you?", he asked. "Sure, any time", I answered. "Good", he said and scratched the nape of his neck, suspiciously nervous.
I tilted my head, squinting my eyes. "Jaaaaay", I said. He smiled innocently and I sighed. "He's coming today already, isn't he?", I asked. He nodded. "When?", I wanted to know. "In one hour", Jay replied. I looked at him disapprovingly. "And I'll have to pick him up and therefore have to leave in a bit?", he added. I continued to stare at him. "I'll get some groceries on my way and my room is already tidy", he said. I took a deep breath. "Aish, whatever. But next time tell me beforehand. I'll clean the rest of the apartment in the meantime, at least the messiest parts. And you better do not forget about my sweets again when you're at the supermarket", I told him. "You're the best!", he exclaimed and hugged me. "Yeah, yeah, I know. Get yourself ready to go out already. You can't pick up your cousin when you haven't even done your hair", I scolded him while freeing myself. "I owe you", he smiled before rushing out again. "Yes, you do", I mumbled to myself and got up. Time to clean.
