a/n: Hi, I am back. This chapter is sort of short, but I think it's a good transition back from my hiatus. Enjoy xoxo

"What do you mean she is gone?" Carina asked. Maya stood up and paced the pool-deck in a panic. Carina joined her and tried to keep her calm.

The blonde ran her fingers through her hair and breathed deeply. "All Jack said is that he woke up from a nap to find a note that said 'I'm sorry.'"

"What about Tanner?"

"He's gone, too," Maya shared. Carina breathed a sigh of relief in realization that Andy didn't leave her child behind. "I'm gonna try calling her." Carina nodded in agreement. Maya let the phone ring until it reached Andy's voicemail. "Damn!"

"Mommy, is everything okay?" Josie asked. She swam up to the ledge of the pool next to her moms and looked up at them with a concerned look.

Carina sat down and put her feet in the water which Jojo immediately clung to. "Yes, bambina. Mommy is just trying to reach Auntie Andy, that's all."

Maya continued to pace and called Andy again. No luck. "I'm going to run inside and change and then head over to her house. Maybe Jack will have more to share."

"Okay, bella. Please keep me updated." The blonde bent down and kissed Carina swiftly and ran off.

Josie swam off to play with the boys while Carina kicked her feet around in the water. Laura took this opportunity to swim towards Carina. "What's going on?" she asked.

The Italian furrowed her brow down at the younger blonde. She didn't want to overshare, but she knew that Laura wasn't dumb so there was no point in lying. "Just some stuff with Andy," she shared.

"They're still friends?" Laura asked.

"Like sisters," Carina added. She did not want to be probed any longer by Laura's questions, so she asked her to leave. "I think it's time I bring the kiddos in for some rest."

"Thanks for having us over for a swim. Even if this is awkward." Laura gestured to both of them. Carina kept her mouth in a tight line and nodded. She gathered up the kids and brought them inside for some snacks and rest time.

Across town, Maya whipped the Jeep into Andy and Jack's driveway. She raced up the steps and pounded on the door until Jack answered. "Is she back yet?" Maya asked, breathlessly.

He looked down solemnly and shook his head no. His eyes were swollen from the tears and he had clutched the crumpled note from her tightly in his hands. He handed it over to Maya to read. It was as simple as he had explained to her. 'I'm sorry' was all it really read. The both of them walked inside and sat down silently on the couch. "Were there any warning signs?" Maya asked after a few moments of quiet.

"No," he stuttered. "Were there any from you?" he asked.

That's when it hit her. There clearly were. There was no way this was not attached to the conversation about Andy never being promoted to captain. The secret she was hiding had finally come to fruition. "Oh my God, yes," she admitted.

Jack sat up straighter and looked to her for more information. "What?"

"When I was going through the interview process for chief, they told me that Andy would never be promoted to captain, but they never said why. When I asked her about it she got all defensive and weird."

"When did this happen?" he asked.

"Yesterday before the end of shift."

"I knew something was off about her yesterday. I was shocked that she agreed to go out last night with everyone. This morning she was quiet, but nothing extremely unusual. Do you have any idea what she is hiding?"
