"Sullivan?!" Maya screamed. She ran her strong hands through her short blonde hair and sighed. "Why would she go and see him?"
Jack returned to the living room with a duffel bag at his side. He was out of breath from how quick he packed. He mouthed to Maya, "Any news?"
She quickly ended her phone call with Carina and patted the seat next to her on the couch. Maya placed her hand on Jack's thigh and looked up into his desperate eyes. "Carina reminded me of something... it all makes sense now with the voice we heard in the background."
"What?" he pleaded.
"Sullivan," she said in a somber voice. She knew that this news would take the wind out of Jack's sails. Maya expected him to lose his cool and scream, but he did the opposite. He shut down. "Say something, Jack, please."
He shook his head no.
"Jack, why would she go and visit Sullivan?"
She knew that he knew why. The energy in the room had significantly shifted since she uttered his name. After a few moments of silence, he spoke and said, "Maya, you should go."
"Jack, what, why?" she asked, flabbergasted.
"I can't explain why." He stood up and dragged his bag back to the bedroom and began to unpack the clothes he had hastily thrown in. Maya stood in the doorway and watched the disheveled firefighter slowly fall apart. By the time his bag was empty, he was on the floor sobbing. Maya quietly squatted down next to him and wrapped him in an embrace. No matter what their past was, at this moment she needed to be there for her friend. He quietly sobbed into her arms for an unknown amount of time. Before she knew it, Carina was standing in the doorway with an exasperated look on her face. The Italian joined them on the floor and joined in on the squeeze. She grabbed Maya's hand that was on Jack's back and rubbed it tenderly to let her know that she was also there for her, not just Jack.
"You two should go," Jack whispered after half an hour. "You have an early flight. I will be okay."
Maya looked up at Carina and the doctor nodded back at her. They silently communicated what Maya knew she needed to say next. "We aren't going. We will stay here with you."
"Absolutely not," he insisted. "I can't say much, but Andy told me that if she ever spoke to Sullivan again that I needed to stay out of it and let her figure it out."
Maya furrowed her brow in complete confusion and asked, "You can't say any more?"
"You don't want to know more, Maya. I can't put that on you as the city's future Battalion Chief."
"You can trust me, Jack, please," she begged.
He stood up from the hard floor and wiped his sweaty palms down the front of his jeans. "Please, Maya, just go."
Carina added, "At least let us send Miller over here for the night. We need to make sure you are okay." He silently nodded in agreement and Carina scurried out of the room to call him.
Maya slowly stood up and asked, "How bad is it?"
"Trust me, it's better that you don't know."

It was three in the morning by the time both wives hit their light pink satin pillowcases. Their alarms would go off in just two and a half hours for their flight.
"Bambina, we don't have to go on the trip," Carina said, exhausted.
Maya rolled over on her side and looked her wife in the eyes. She raised one hand to her cheek and stroked it lightly. Carina closed her eyes as their skin connected. "There's nothing I can do. As much as I want to help her, it's clear that whatever she is fighting has to be fought on her own."
