Adhira
Agonizing.
described the pain she was feeling. The last two hours caught her curled in a ball to ease the pain that was tearing her sternum apart, an unparallel tempo that mimicked the hammering of a drill continuously in a hole; breaking and eventually tearing through as it pleases.Slowly she lost her ability to breathe, a crippling grip had formed around her throat, restricting her airflow and ability to act upon impulse. Her heart rate slowed to a thumping, dangerously close to stopping.
It had been months since she had an episode, she was too trusting in Ma Tibby's so-called cure. The spiritualist had been convincing enough for her mother to buy a vial of the 'remedy' a thick green-like paste that smelled slightly of sulfur and some other herbal-based plants.
poppy-show she tek whi for.
It hadn't worked and she was on the brink of death. nothin' too serious. Ojal had warned her never to trust a spiritualist as their connections were always unstable and often a fluke when they can't read into the signs they got.
Never really sure what connections were, she assumed it had to do with a contact within the spiritual realm if there was such a thing because all her supernatural knowledge came from books she had read and some old archived history books she "borrowed" from the library.
Adhira started convulsing, eyes popping outside of the sockets, as her nose expelled blood, she gagged profusely trying with all her might to get rid of whatever was blocking her tracheal makeup.
Being home alone was not good because by now her mother would've come into her room and allowed her to use the lavender healing vape to clear whatever was affecting the girl.
A thick vapor of darkness started forming in the room, enveloping every corner as if reaching out to the girl
"chosen one, chosen one" It echoed like a continuous rhapsody.
The temperature had dropped, as the darkness drew closer to Adhira who was now a shivering mess.
"make way child, stop fighting the inevitable" the voice within the darkness spoke, quite harshly.
A set of footsteps was heard pounding on the staircase as they ascended. Just as her room door was thrown open the vapor had left leaving behind an awful sulphuric scent.
"Cracker! are you ok? why are you bleeding?" Mehri asked. She couldn't help but be frightened seeing her sister in a situation such as this, retching and squirming; on the brink of death.
The older girl had grown suspicious when she'd call out to her sister after she came home as per usual, but her hailings surpassed six times and she knew something had gone wrong
following her gut feeling, she ran up the stairs in fright, fearing that her sister might have once again been elevated or worse become a shadow version of herself like she did last time.
The whole family was used to her unnatural episodes, they've adjusted quite well over the years fully accepting that they are a part of something bigger than themselves.
Their parents had their abnormalities, possessing blue-grey eyes as black people were rare, and to say they were able to be more than blue-eyed individuals paints the picture of what two individuals with genetic mutations could do.
Both Mehri and Arun had blue-gray eyes capturing the same details as their parents the intricacy was astounding as each spiral detail was to a T when compared to their parents.
Not so much in Adhira's case, she was born with heterochromia blue and grey eyes each distinct iris held its design, her radial streaks and furrows were miniature lightning bolts giving the impression that they were constantly flickering.
Mehri reached for the vial containing the lavender mixture and placed it beneath her younger sister's nose allowing for the light mist to travel up her nostrils, calming the tremors throughout her body.
A vial was given to each family member by their granny Theresa who'd made most of their medicinal concoctions. She had gone to some place in Venice and was the only reason a concoction wasn't made for Adhira's fits-like episodes in the first place.
The convulsing had gone and the blood flows to a meager trickle. She continued to retch and claw at her throat while tears streamed down her eyes. It was then her sister saw the huge lump that was formed in the middle of her throat.
The older girl started panicking she had limited knowledge on what could dislodge whatever it was that got caught up in her sister's throat si when uh nuh listen when people deh talk she scolded herself mentally regretting not listening to her granny most times.
Calling her mom would be the right option but she was cautious of her mother's whereabouts remembering the board meeting she'd attended given her new promotion in the herbal pharmaceutical agency she worked.
Granny it was. the phone was answered on the third ring "hello, pleasant surprise summer, what uh want" her grandma answered with a blend of sarcasm and concern lacing her words.
"Cracker is having one of those episodes again ma,mhi use the lavender thingy but it only helped to stop the blood flow and shaking, there's a big lump in her throat and she's clawing at it like a mad woman, I don't even know what else to do" The girl ranted in distress.
"smell the room summer and tell mhi what it smells like" confused the older girl sniffed the room at first only smelling the lavender mixture and a tint of vanilla that was always present in Cracker's room but on the second sniff she caught the faint scent of sulfur and pimento.
"Sulphur and pimento out of the ordinary, it's faint though nana, "Mehri said.
"Just as I'd imagine, Tibby has gone too far, she opened a portal with that concoction your foolish mother accepted I'm betting cracker was greeted by a shadow passer luckily not a soul reaper. Have her chew on some sandalwood and see what comes up".Mehri wasted no time in grabbing a glass jar holding the sandalwood, she fed it to her sister who had great difficulty chewing while still choking on the object sitting square in her throat.
In the space of five minutes, the object slowly started to move, pushing its way up her throat cutting the soft tissues in the process before finally plopping onto the tiled floor. Surrounded by a small amount of blood the two stared quizzically at the dry flower-like plant.
"White baneberry and water hemlock mutation, in short hemlock's bane, If that's the meaning of your silence. It should be an umbel shape flower alongside some eyeball-looking petals protruding from the stem" said nana." very dangerous and a petty warning to yield" she continued saying.
"Warning from wh-" beep!
"Well that's that, how are you feeling cracker," Mehri asked.
"Like somebody was grating coconuts in my throat trash and all and juicing my lungs to make something quite tasty" the young one answered with amusement clear in her voice as if she hadn't experienced death just now.
"What triggered your episode," her sister asked daringly.
Adhira froze, eyes pleading for her sister to eliminate her curiosity.
too soon, She thought.
She shook her head and pointed at the plant "what are we going to do about that" she asked.
"Like always, give it to daddy so he can form a plausible research on it, besides the mumbo jumbo grandma spewed just now, we don't know how it came to be lodged in your throat," Mehri said.
Before either girl could package the plant, it disintegrated into a white powder before vaporizing.
"There goes our proof of abnormality"
