Chapter 24 - Fireworks

They work together to make the room as festive as they could possibly make it, before beginning to devour the food together as a group, savoring the flavorful tastes that Xiangling always whipped up every year.

Ganyu had to leave soon, of course, but Keqing made sure to tell her how much she loved her, and how much she wished she could witness the New Year with her. She breathes the qilin's scent, remembering the distinctive scent of citrus - like perfume that surrounded her. Ganyu squeezes her hand before she runs off, and for some, strange, strange reason...

It felt so much nicer than usual.

How she wishes she could kiss her - even a small peck on the cheek would be enough.

Maybe it was because it was about to tick over to the new year, but her hands felt especially soft. She only held her hand for a mere two seconds, and yet her heart was racing.

She could feel herself turning horribly pink.

She felt warm, and she couldn't stop thinking about how soft her best friend was. The pads of her fingertips, the curve of her delicate fingers and the way they all connected together. The way her eyes sparkled when she talked, the soft blush that adorned her cheeks when she was happy, and the few times that she slipped her hand into the lavender haired girl's own was nothing short of amazing.

God, she was so stupidly down bad for the qilin.

Soon after, it ticks over to 11:55, and her friends excitedly chatter. "What are you going to ask for the new year, Keqing?" says Xiangling, curious. "I mean, ask for a Nintendo Switch? I've wanted one for so long now, but my parents will probably not let me because it'll distract me from my studies. What about you?" replies Keqing, looking up at the chef. "Why are you blushing...? But I'd like to perhaps get a girlfriend, it would be nice," chuckles Xiangling awkwardly, looking off into the distance. "I'm still blushing? Oh god," mutters Keqing, dipping her head in embarrassment.

"Still? Ooh, what did our Ganyu do now?" ponders Xiangling, teasing the Electro wielder with a playful grin on her face. "Okay, um, how do I explain this- Alright, so she held my hand for like two seconds. Not a big deal, not a big deal at all... and I don't know why I'm reacting this way, but it was so warm and the way- the way it just fit perfectly in my hand, like the slight curve to her hands, the way her fingers interlock with mine so, so easily and the way her fingers brushed over mine...I'm too down bad. Not like I can ask her to hold hands with me more often," rambles Keqing, blushing as she tells her friend how happy the little contact made her.

"And she's so cute too, what with her adorable blue hair and those mesmerizing eyes of hers... and the way she's so nice to me," trails Keqing, voice low.

"Oh, you definitely are. Heck, you just rambled about how soft her hands - if that's not down bad, then I don't know what is. Besides, can't you just ask her to hold hands from time to time?" laughs Xiangling, patting her friend on the back.

"To be fair, you are the only person she's THAT nice to... you're also the only person who'll listen to her stupid ass jokes, so that might be it," adds Xiangling, amused. "Thanks for the comforting? Also, no! Imagine having to hold her hand for more than 3 seconds, I think I'd go red and die," replies Keqing, flushing as the Pyro wielder huffs, her cheeks blown up with air. Keqing then pokes her cheeks with one finger on each side and she exhales in what sounded like a balloon before the two started laughing uncontrollably.

The Electro wielder rarely had a reason to lie to the chef, but on occasion she had to, just to avoid her endless teasing about her best friend.

Because if Xiangling thought her wish of a Nintendo Switch might be attainable, her real wish would never come true... unless the qilin somehow developed feelings for her, which would be downright impossible.

Keqing's real wish... was to become Ganyu's girlfriend.

When the time ticks over to 11:59, she finds her small phone buzzing in her pocket, and the lavender - haired girl pulls it out, and to her surprise, it's Ganyu.

"Ganyu?"

"Hey Keqing, I'm really going to miss not being able to see the fireworks wit you this year, so how about we at least... listen to it, together?" murmurs Ganyu, and Keqing nearly swore from the way her heart skipped a beat. "Yeah! Yeah, sounds good," replies Keqing, enthusiastically.

"Keqing, Keqing, it's time!" yells Xiangling, as they start the countdown.

"10!"

"9!"

"8!"

"7!"

"6!"

"5!"

"4!"

"3!"

"2!"

"1!"

"Happy New Year!" exclaim the group, and Keqing can't get over how cute her voice sounded, even with the horrible audio quality of her phone. Immediately, the Electro wielder thinks of her wish for that year, putting all her heart into it as she prays, breathing deeply.

"Qing, Happy New Year! Here's to another year of our amazing friendship!" giggles Ganyu and mentally, the lavender - haired girl sighs. "Mhm. Talk to you tomorrow, Yuyu!" responds Keqing, ever joyous as she ends the call and puts her phone back in her pocket with a deep, heavy sigh as she turns her eyes to the sky and streaks of color paint it in iridescent bursts of light and flame.

And her New Year's wish is already not granted.

She watches the fireworks, color exploding in the sky quickly, making the night sky even more resplendent.
