Raising Sailor

I-scream

"He was... terrible. To us, to our mother and when you were born it got worse. He was especially mean to our mother. He didn't like that she had a girl, our dad was scared you would grow up to be like our mother, which he thought was useless. Which of course isn't true, our mother was amazing! But one day things got really bad, they were in an argument which dad started as per usual and he hurt mommy really bad, so bad that she passed away. We never seen him again after that."

I was shocked.
He killed my mommy?
No wonder they didn't want to tell me about any of this.
I felt guilty for basically forcing them to tell me.
It must have been so hard on them.

"Where is he now?" I asked.
They all looked extremely worried.
"In prison!" Said Cameron giving everyone else a look.
"Good" I replied.
I felt sick to my stomach.
How could someone do such a terrible thing?

"Em, who wants to go and get ice cream?" Asked Hayden desperately trying to lighten the mood.
"ME!" I shout.
"We'll walk its not to far from here!"

____flashback____

Cameron's POV
the night their mother passed away.
Sailor (age 1)
Cameron (age 16)
Hayden (age 12)
Austin (age 13)
Levi (age 9)

I woke up to screaming and shouting from downstairs.
They were fighting again.
I could hear things breaking and smashing.
Then I heard crying.
It was Sailor.
I hop out of bed and run into her room.
She was still in her cot.
The fighting must have woken her up.
I pick her up trying to stop her crying.

I turn around to see Austin, Hayden and a crying Levi.
"Cameron what's going on?" Asked Hayden
"I think mam and dad are fighting again, come on let's go to my room, we can I sleep in there tonight." I say while guiding them through the dark into my room.

I quickly lock the door behind me.
"It's going to be okay Levi!" Said Austin while hugging him.
"Why are they fighting?" Asked Levi still crying.
"I don't know." I responded.
My dad most likely started it.
I just wanted to go downstairs and scream at him.

"Mommy!" Cried Sailor.
"It's okay, she's okay!" I say, but I am not even sure if she is.

Suddenly I heard a slight scream from downstairs followed by a thud.
then shouting stoped, it all went quite.

"What happened?" Asked Hayden.
"I'll go check!" I say putting Sailor down and unlocking the door.

I creep down the stairs.
Silence.

There were chairs on the ground, tiny pieces of glass on the floor.
The place was a mess.
I couldn't see my mam or dad anywhere.

The front door was wide open.
All I could hear were the sound of crashing waves.
I look in the kitchen and nothing could prepare me for what I saw next.
My mother was on the ground.
She had split her head open .

I ran over to her sobbing.
She wouldn't wake up.

Sailors POV:

"What flavour would you like?" Cameron asked while lifting me up to show me the flavours they had.
"Pink!" I shout.
"Pink isn't a flavour!" Levi hissed.
"What one do you want Lee?" Asked Cameron
"Mint please"
"Can I get one small strawberry ice-cream and one small mint ice-cream please?" Cameron asked the woman ruining the stall.
"Are you not getting anything?" I asked Cameron
"It's too early for me!"
"What about you two?" I asked Hayden and Austin.
"Too early!"
"Same!" Said Austin.

I didn't understand, it's never too early for ice-cream!

"Here you are! Happy Father's Day." Said the lady behind the counter to Cameron. "Your dad is very nice getting these for you!" She added.
Hayden and Austin try hide their laugh.
"Oh, no I am not their dad, I'm there brother!" Cameron said clearly embarrassed.
"Oh, sorry! Well tell you dad I said happy Fathers Day!"
"Will do, thanks.."

As we walked back to the house Cameron kept asking "do I look like a dad? I mean I don't look that old! Do I?"
Clearly overthinking it.
But was answered with laughter from Austin and Hayden.
I was just happy they weren't sad.
