Up To No Good

Kinnick's screams of frustration followed me into the hallway, where I cried. I could hear his fist collide with the wall as the door slammed behind me. I wanted to tell him the kiss meant nothing. After what happened in his office, I wanted to know if Luke could make me feel the way Kinnick did. No matter how hard I pressed my lips against his, it never worked. My heart only belonged to one person, and that one person wanted me to get away.

My feet carried me down the hallway, even though they faltered on the way. I struggled to stand on my own as I walked back toward the bar. A squeak broke through my lips as my body ran into a tattooed boy's chest. I looked up to see Miles staring at me with confusion. I wasn't sure if he heard Kinnick, but the pounding music made it difficult to hear anything.

He wanted to ask if something was wrong, but instead of waiting for him to say something. I knew he was calling my name, but I didn't care as I stepped away. My eyes met John's face of remorse as he came toward me. It made me wonder if everyone knew what happened.

"Is everything okay?"

"What makes you think it isn't?"

He nodded toward the hallway, asking me to follow him. I trailed behind John as he led me down the corridor to a separate room. He fell back onto the couch as he looked at me with worry. It was as if he had a million questions, but his face made him appear scared to ask.

"I heard Kinnick," he trailed off.

My face fell into my hands. "He saw me kissing Luke."

"Oh -"

"I didn't kiss him because I have feelings for him," I cried out. "I wanted to see if he could make me feel how Kinnick did."

"Why?"

My voice cracked. "It would be easier to walk away."

"You can't walk away when it is real."

Tipsy John spoke straight to my soul, and it wasn't long into our conversation that he was convincing me to sneak out of the back door. Our bodies stumbled down the streets of our city as we moved slowly toward the McDonald's down the road. He promised it would cure my broken heart. So, we stood in the lobby, ordering whatever seemed pleasing off of the menu. Instead of staying in the lobby, the employees asked us to leave.

Now I am sitting in front of my best friend, eating french fries smothered in ranch as we hum to different tunes in our heads. It made me realize how much I missed John but how different our relationship was now that we had overcome the past. I felt closer to him than ever.

"Luke thinks we are together," I said as if he wanted to hear me rant about boys. "What is he going to do when I tell him that I slept with Kinnick?"

"Who cares as long as you are happy?"

My shoulders shrugged as I sucked down the sprite in my cup. Just as I opened my mouth to bite into the chicken nugget in my hand, I looked up to see Trevor walking through the door. He furrowed his eyebrows as he stared in amusement. His eyebrow arched as he stared down at the McDonald's between John and me. His tattooed hand reached out, snatching a french fry from my box.

"Hey!"

He winked down at me. "What are you weirdos doing anyway?"

"Eating," I rolled my eyes. "What does it look like, T?"

He smiled at my nickname. "It looks like you guys are up to no good."

"Trouble is our middle name," I shrugged, spinning in the office chair.

"Your boyfriend is looking for you," his head moved back and forth as he laughed.

"Which one?" John snickered, making me gasp.

I threw a french fry at him as I stood up. "Asshole."

John's laughter filled the room as he stood up to hug me. "If you need somewhere to stay, call me."

Luke waited at the bar, watching as Trevor leaned down to kiss my cheek before leaving me alone with the man I used to call my best friend. The second no one was around; Luke started asking questions. He wanted to know why I kissed him and if it meant anything to me as it did to him, but I knew I couldn't say a thing as he asked with a dark tone to his voice. I followed him toward the car where Miles waited.

"Are you okay, best friend?"

"Always."

"You know I am always here for you, right?"

I grinned up at him as he opened my door. "My prince."

"Anything for my princess."

When we made it to the apartment, I felt the alcohol settling in my stomach. The nauseous feeling begged me to lay down. So, I carried myself to my room, where Luke didn't trail too far behind. His heavy footsteps made my emotions stir with anxiety as he followed me into my bedroom.

"Where were you all night?"

"I went with John to McDonald's."

His hands motioned to me. "Wearing that?"

"I was with John."

"Bo, I don't even know who he is," he threw his hands in the air. "How do I know he can keep you safe?"

"Did you even realize I was gone?"

"I saw you disappear with Kinnick."

"And? Nothing is going on between you and I."

"What happened between you two?"

"None of that is any of your business."

"You can't keep leading me on -"

"I made it clear that I was using you to forget, Luke."

"So, what? You are back with him now?"

"No -"

"But you slept with him, didn't you?" His voice hardened. "That is where you were all night."

"It doesn't matter!" I snapped. "I don't love you, Luke. You are not him, and you never will be. Do you understand that? My heart will always belong to Kinnick."

"Are you fucking kidding me? After everything he did -"

My back turned to him as I felt the exhaustion sweeping over me. "Luke, go to bed."

"Don't turn your back on me."

I didn't worry about his threat until I collided with the wall. My face smacked the surface as he pushed against me. I whimpered the moment he flipped me around to look at him. My nose throbbed as I felt liquid pouring over my mouth. My shaky hands reached up, touching my lips to see my fingertips covered in blood.

He stared at the blood dripping down my face as he pinned me to the wall. Just as his lips parted to speak, the bedroom door flew open.  I watched fingers curl over Luke's shoulder before he was yanked backward. Miles hurried toward me to inspect my injury, but I held up my hands to stop him as I moved toward the purse on my nightstand. My hand snatched the bag with my keys before I hurried toward my bedroom door.

I kicked off my heels at the door before hurrying down the hallway. Sobs left my lips as my nose throbbed in pain. I couldn't see through my blurry vision. Miles called out to me as I stumbled down the stairs, but I made it out the door before he could catch me.

My shaky hand gripped the steering wheel as I turned over the car. I didn't know where to go. I wanted to go to Kinnick, but he didn't want me, even if what he assumed was wrong. My fingers stumbled over the screen of my phone as I searched for his number.

"Bo?"

I wiped the blood from my nose as his voice came from the other side of my phone. "Is the door to the elevator unlocked?"

"Always."

"I am on my way -"

"Bo," he sighed.

"Please," I choked on a sob.

"What happened? His tone changed. "Where are you?"

Before I ended the call, I answered. "I am almost there."
