"Volt!" Three voices exclaimed in unison.
The blue squirrel jerked to life from his third time dozing off, wide midnight eyes blinking rapidly in panic. His vision cleared to meet his teammates' reprimanding faces.
He quickly perked from his seat in an attempt to appear innocent, a drop of drool dribbling from his chin.
"Ahem," Commander Chen coughed for their attention, successfully ignoring the incident as he resumed his speech. "As I was saying, from what we've analyzed from the recent reports, the Army—"
He was again, but this time more politely, interrupted by a series of knocks at the door. With an irritated sigh, the old white cat tapped the desk before him. "Yes?"
"Sorry to interrupt the lesson," A pair of fuzzy graying ears poked themselves into the meeting room, followed by the spectacled face of a middle-aged rabbit. The badge 'Dr. Jeremy' glinted against his pale lab attire. "Ipas, the spy we've sent to investigate the army, has a call for the Commander."
A delicate figure entered the room after her father, snowy fur contrasting with striking ruby eyes, a ringing cellphone clutched a bit too tightly in her paw.
"Very well," Commander Chen gestured for the desperate cellphone. Anna deposited the ringing device into his hands as though it burned, dipping her head and hiding the flash of fury through her long lashes.
"Commander Chen?" A desperate whisper escaped as soon as the Commander had answered the call. "This is Ipas, and I've got important news to report!"
Brows furrowed, Commander Chen observed the suddenly silent and well-behaved critters, each with eagerness in their gaze, clearly hoping to eavesdrop — especially Volt, who had bounced from his chair, without any traces of sleep at the mention of Ipas's name.
The old white cat let out his second sigh within the last minute, deciding the possible bad news would be better broken gently to the anxious four. He turned off the speakers, cutting off the high volume as he strode towards the back of the room.
"Yes? Go on."
Without the eavesdropping opportunity, the atmosphere in the room suddenly shifted into an awkward one. Dr. Jeremy exited the room, leaving the tense atmosphere for the youngsters.
A flash of ruby shot a deathly glare in Volt's direction, and he shrunk back into his seat with a cringe.
Anna casually seated herself across from the blue squirrel, lifting a mug of tea from the table. "I see that you do care a lot about this Ipas," she remarked nonchalantly, sloshing the translucent green in circles inside the china.
Volt's eyes darted to Lucy, desperate plead in his gaze. The usual peacemaker avoided eye contact and studied the wall with interest — their personal relationship problems were not her business to interfere with.
"I..." Volt swallowed hard, his eyes flicking away from the refused help and towards his old crush.
"Forget it," Anna snapped, setting the mug back onto the table with a clang. The tea trembled, terrified by her rage.
Sammy and Max reached for the investigation reports laid over the table, skimming through the pages with feigned focus.
"No, I..." Volt licked his dry lips, short on words. Anna's paw tightened around the handle of the mug, nearly shattering the curved piece of china.
Lucy glanced back at the two with concern, contemplating whether or not to ease the tension. Images of the last time Volt had angered Anna replayed in her mind — the blue squirrel had ended up flat on the floor, buried under a mountain of coke cans from being smacked against the vending machine.
Whether Volt deserved it or not, now wasn't great timing.
A deep cough startled the tense critters, swiveling in their seats as though they had been caught committing a crime. None of them had any idea how long Commander Chen had been standing behind them and how much embarrassing exchange he had heard. Although judging from the old cat's expression, their relationship problems couldn't be further from his mind.
"What happened now?" Volt inquired, half truly concerned and half hoping to divert Anna's attention.
"This matter should first be discussed with the headquarters." Commander Chen shook his head, sweeping his eyes across the table in search for the missing reports, which Max and Sammy awkwardly returned.
"Commander, please!" Volt pressed, rising from his seat with an unusually serious look. "If anything, we deserve to know first!"
Commander Chen regarded the agents, his gaze softening beneath his dark glasses. Each critter wore identical determination, adventurous twinkles evident even through the worried crease of their eyes.
These are the children he longed to protect deep down, yet he was the commander and they were the agents, each with their own duties and responsibilities.
After all, they are the Miniforce. Their forces were born to face danger for those who cannot themselves.
"In short, Pascal has obtained new power, and is currently planning to upgrade his army." He gave in to their pleading eyes, his raucous voice echoing.
Despite mentally preparing themselves, the news still hit like a punch to the gut, the team silent as the information sank in.
"Oh no," Volt breathed. "This is bad, this is really really–"
"And we totally didn't know that." Sammy deadpanned.
"But there must be some way we can prevent that," Volt caught himself from panicking, quickly summoning all the optimism left.
"Totally!" Anna muttered sarcastically, bringing the cup to her muzzle for a sip. "Like walking straight into the lion's den and bombing his power source! Wouldn't that be something I'd pay to see."
Volt's eyes lit with excitement. "You're right! That's it!"
Anna spat out her tea.
