At training, everyone stood around except for a few people, Madeline being one of those people. She was working on her kicks on the dummy. "Class, fall in." Kreese calls. Everyone quickly makes it to their spot. "Today we have a very important lesson, don't we, Sensei Silver?" "Yes, we do. Weakness." Silver states, eyes on Madeline, his weakness. "Your opponent's weakness must be exploited whenever possible." Kreese says. "At the tournament, you'll have to recognize that weakness. And make no mistake, we all have one." Silver states. "Sensei Kreese doesn't." Tory says.
"Of course he does. We all do. Today, your goal is to find your opponent's weakness and attack it. No points. You hit the mat, you lose. You got it? All right, prepare for combat." Everyone moves to circle the mat instead of standing on it. They watch as Silver calls for Piper and Kreese calls for Tory. They get into position and Piper does a cartwheel, starting to flip around. "Just gonna dance around or you gonna throw something?" Tory sneers. "Why not both?" Piper smiles as they continue to fight. Tory knocks Piper's legs from beneath her and she hits the mat. Silver sighs.
He knows he should've picked Madeline and not Piper. "Good one, Sensei Kreese. Who's next?" Silver asks. Kyler and another boy fight, Kyler winning. "Good work, Mr. Park. Another one for me." Kreese says. "Double or nothing?" Silver offers. "Okay. Mr. Keene." "Payne." The class snickers. They bow toward each other before getting into position. Robby kicks Kenny in the arm and quickly asks if he's okay. "Back to your corners." Kreese orders. "Back on the mat." Silver calls after a moment. Robby kicks his arm again, apologizing before Kenny knocks his legs out from underneath him.
Kenny and Silver high five. "There. What did we learn? The common belief is you shouldn't care what other people think about you, right? Wrong. What your opponent is thinking is key. In war. In business. In a fight. Don't let your opponent think whatever they want. Make them think what you want them to think. If they think you're weak, that's when you can surprise them with your strength. Good job." Silver says, walking to Kreese. Madeline is a bit upset she didn't get a chance to fight, but she ignores it. Later that week, she's sat in the backroom, waiting for her grandfather to come back while Silver reads. "A man of his word."
Kreese walks in, holding up the six-pack. "Woah, are those Ba Muoi Ba?" Silver asks, lying his book down and walking over. "Old 33s. They've changed a bit since the war. To the victor go the spoils." Kreese hands him the bottles. "Sweet! Hello!" Silver smiles, walking back over to his seat. "You know who those remind me of?" "Huh?" Silver looks over at him. "Scovil. The good old boy from Utah." Kreese says. "Yeah. Yeah, never washed his ass. You could smell him coming a mile away." Silver states and Madeline snorts, continuing to scroll on her phone, Silver glances at her.
"Remember the day we were on patrol, and he took it upon himself to jump rank and take point?" Kreese asks. "Yeah, crazy bastard." Silver says. "Wound up walking directly into a minefield. Blew himself to kingdom come." Kreese chuckles. "That's the kind of story I'd rather forget." Silver says, shaking his head. "We don't have the luxury of forgetting. Nor should we. We should remember what happens to soldiers who don't follow their leader." Kreese walks to Silver, "Johnny, look, is this about-" "Quiet! I'm not done speaking, Lieutenant." Kreese points at him harshly.
"The other day when we were teaching, you told the students that I have a weakness." "I said everyone has a weakness." Silver defends. "No, you specifically talked about me. And it made me wonder... what do you think my weakness is?" Kreese asks and Silver sighs. "Look, it was just a lesson for the class." "You're afraid to tell me." Silver sighs again. "Do you remember the cage? We both thought we were gonna die. I wasn't afraid. You were." "Grandpa, stop." Madeline butts in. "Shut it, Madeline." Kreese snaps, turning on his heel to face her. "You'll stay out of this. You'll sit and listen, but you'll shut up." He snarls at her.
