Please read, it doesn't have any Golden Guard in it but it sets up the entire plot for later.

"We've got this, Adex." You slipped on your scout's mask, reassuring yourself more so than your palisman. You'd been in the coven for 2 years now; you had been since you were 14. Each year all scouts must go through Coven Orientation, a set of tests and trials to ensure only the strongest have their place in the ranks. Last year you surprised the coven with your skills, looked down upon because of your size and age you shocked the crowd as you stole 12th place out of the 200 people who did pass. You were no longer a nobody, you were an enemy or an ally.

The trails started at 9 A.M today and ended at 9 A.M tomorrow. They lasted overnight, making sure the games never stop, testing endurance and determination. There were mind games and strength tests, Scout VS Scout, Scout VS Leader, VS Self, VS Nature, anything could be thrown at you. You often compared it to the hunger games, but instead of taking your life, it took your job and your previously secured future.

It was now 8 A.M. You were never too fond of coven meals, and had a small make-shift kitchen in your room in the Castle. The top 20 ranks of the year get bigger rooms closer to the main halls, so your room was about twice the size of a normal room, and you'd created a loft where you kept study space, as well as a mini-fridge and freezer, a small two-burner stove, and a toaster oven. You created a levitation spell and went up to your loft, quickly making griffin eggs and grabbing a box of apple blood.

Once you'd eaten, it was 8:36, so you headed out to the training grounds early. Once there you released your palisman and let him go fly off and play with the others. Apex was an "Amblen demon"; best be described as a pale green fox with wings. His tail had a white tip and he had a matching white tuft of fur on his head, as well as white bat-like wings and white toes. His eyes were a soft pink. You began to converse with your best friend in the coven so far, Steve. He had been in the coven for 3 years and was turning 19 this weekend. He had been like an older brother to you since you joined the coven. (We support Steve guard supremacy in this household, our cult chant is; "Shoulder pats for Steve. 😎")

You were both talking about how nervous you were when you heard the sound of trumpets announcing the commencement of Orientations. As Emperor Belos himself stepped onto the stage, everyone quieted down and stood up straight.

"Welcome distinguished Scouts and Castle Guards. As we all know, today is Orientations day. Over the next 24 hours, you will work to prove your use to the Coven. The strongest 200 out of these 400 will continue serving the coven, however, the weak shall leave and hope they might get in the next Emperor's Coven tryouts. This is a special Orientation event because the Golden Guard is looking out for his new assistant, who will be joining him on future missions, quests, and battles."

Everyone gasped as murmurs rose and faded amongst the crowds, falling for him to speak again.

"The first trial will be of Scout VS Scout. This will be an elimination process. 25% of you will be eliminated, the rest will move on. All will be paired up randomly in groups of 2, the losers of the round will be paired against each other to duel, and the losers of that will be removed from the trials."

You ended up with someone you'd never met before, but by the looks of it, she'd been in the coven for a while. This would intimidate most people, but you thought about it logically. She has the necklace awarded to those who've been in the coven for 10 years, but as she was a simple scout like you, she was never good enough to advance, only to stay in. You quickly noticed her palisman as a Geor, best described as a Boar with types of rock and mineral-related "powers". These made them well known for being blunt in battle and relying on brute force and strength to win. Palisman tell lots about people, and you had always been much more observant than you tended to lead on.
