chapter one: the sister
As your eyes open to the light of the early morning, you sit up from your spot on the park bench you slept on and stretch your arms way out into the sky. You then look out upon the lovely view you're awakening from and thank god that it's the middle of summer. You don't know what you'd do if you were cast out like this in the colder months. But you suppose that you are lucky your parents didn't pay you much mind last winder.
Just as you're awakening, you feel a buzz from your foot. You reach down into your shoe where you had left your almost dead cellphone- you wouldn't want to leave it in your pocket for someone to steal while you're sleeping, after all- and see that you just got a text from your brother. Your eyebrows knit together as you read words you never thought you'd see from him.
"Let's meet up today."
You are quite hesitant to give him a response. You know that jerk is probably up to something or wants something from you. And as you're pondering whether to get up from your warm spot on the somewhat cozy bench, an older man approaches you and sits right down beside you with absolutely no room in between. You can feel his arm brush up against yours which makes you instantly pull away. However, as you lean away from the creepy stranger, he leans in that much closer to you.
"You're up early, sweetheart. Long night last night?" he grins disgustingly.
"Yeah," you drawl sarcastically as you come up with a plan for the creep to leave you alone. "And the morning wood is killer right now, too!"
With horror written all over the pervert's face, he quickly walks off in a huff. You just roll your eyes and go back to the message written on your phone. It's not like you want to see your brother, especially after he showed no mercy when your parents kicked you out of the house, but maybe you could at least get a free meal out of the whole stupid thing.
"I'll meet you for breakfast. You're paying."
A little while later you yawn and get up from your spot on the bench. You then begin your walk to the nearest Starbucks- the agreed-upon location- and wait empty-handed for your brother to show up with his stupid face (and hopefully some cash).
The baristas all give you a dirty look as you take a seat at one of their nice tables, but you don't pay them much mind. Besides, your brother soon walks in with his frustratingly clean striped suit and wipes down the chair across from you before sitting down.
You're a bit stunned when you see him casually sitting with you. Part of your brain honestly thought that this whole thing was a joke just to make him laugh for getting you all the way out here with a rumbling stomach.
"Tetta," you call with a bit of poison in your tone.
"Hm," he nods. "Hello, Y/N. It has been a while."
"Yeah, well, it's only been since the day that I was thrown out of the house by our parents but who's counting?" you smile fakely.
Your brother only hums and nods in agreement. "Can I buy you a coffee or something?" he then asks.
"That'd be lovely," you reply. "I'll take a coffee and a croissant sandwich."
He then stands up and walks off to purchase the items. You sigh as he walks away, finally able to take a breath from the stuffy air that surrounds you when you're with him. Once he returns, he gets straight to the point of why he's brought you here.
"Do you plan on changing your mind yet?" he asks.
"No," you scoff. "I have absolutely no plans on getting married anytime soon."
Your brother shakes his head in disapproval. "All they want is to see you give them grandkids, you know."
"That's sick," you reply, choking on your coffee. "Why don't they just make your sorry ass do it. They think you're the perfect one anyway."
"It's not the same thing."
"If you just came here to influence me to change my mind about it then your plan isn't going to worry," you tell him. "How many times do I need to tell you this?"
"I'm sorry, Y/N," he shakes his head. "That's not why I asked you here at all. I'd like to set you up with the apartment above me."
"There's an apartment above where you live? I thought you had some kind of mansion home," you scoff. "Why the hell do you wanna do that anyway? What do you want from me?"
"I need you to do a little bit of spying on someone for me," he replies honestly, for which he does deserve a bit of credit.
"Like stalking? You want me to become a stalker? You're disgusting!" you snap.
"Not like that," he rolls his eyes at your stupidity. "I want you to infiltrate an opposing gang that I've come to detest."
Your fake smile drops the second you hear him use the word 'gang'. "What? You told us that you weren't into all of that anymore! I thought you stopped in... in middle school!"
Your brother shakes his head. "No, it never stopped, Y/N. I just made sure to keep my personal life out of it."
So that's why he's always got money and looks so well put together. He watches from a distance while he has other people do his dirty work for him. As much as you despise everything that he's doing, a nice place to live and some cash payment would be way better than what you're doing now.
"So if I agree then you'll give me the place to live in and money for food and stuff?" you ask.
"I'll give you anything you want so long as you do what I ask."
You think on it for one more singular moment before agreeing. You knew he was plotting something, but you didn't think it would be something so tempting as this deal is. Besides, you thought he'd just try to influence you to find a husband like your parents want so badly.
