When Renée Dwyer received the phone call telling her that Maria Adelina Cristóbal and Ricardo Iglesias Santos had died and left their only son, Ángel, behind, she purchased a same-day plane ticket to Los Angeles. She was told that the three were in a car crash, and while his parents died, luckily Ángel had survived.
Four hours later, Ángel was in his hospital room, resting after getting treated for his whiplash and internal bruising from the seatbelt when his Tía Renée opened the door, and the two cried and held each other for an hour.
Two hours later, Charlie Swan arrived at the hospital, flying in from Washington, and the three of them sat in silence until Ángel fell asleep. He had nightmares, but couldn't seem to wake up from them.
The next day, Isabella Swan and Phil Dwyer, Renée's new husband came to visit. It was only a few months ago that Angel and his parents were at Renee and Phil's wedding in Phoenix.
Newly orphaned, Ángel had no biological family left. Both sets of grandparents were dead, and his parents were both only children, so no uncles or cousins. The closest thing he had to family were Renée, Charlie, and Bella. Ricardo grew up in Forks and was Charlie's childhood friend, the two were as close as brothers. When he met Maria in college, the two fell in love and were married after graduation, moving back to Forks. When Charlie met Renée and fell in love with her, the four were best friends. Ángel grew up close to his Tío Charlie in Forks, and when his mother got a job teaching at UCLA, he was excited to see his Tía Renée and Cousin Isa more often.
After the funeral, Renée handled everything. The house, the family's possessions, even the legal stuff. In his parents' joint will, it was stated that Renée and Charlie were his godparents, and upon their death, he was to be placed into the care of Renée and Charlie Swan. The former couple decided it would be best if he lived with Renée and Bella, so a few weeks after the funeral when everything was straightened out, he found himself in Phoenix with his tia and cousin. Both of their birthdays had passed while Renée figured out all the legal stuff, so not much fuss had been made about it. But neither of them really minded. Bella was just happy she could be there for her cousin, and Ángel would have felt wrong celebrating anyways.
That January, four months after the car accident, the two cousins had finally convinced Renée to let them move in with Charlie so she could spend more time with Phil.
