Seraphina was not supposed to destroy. Seraphina's job was to heal, how could she live with herself if she was the cause of another person's pain?
The answer was simple, she couldn't.
Forgetting was impossible, and forgiving herself seemed to get harder and harder everyday.
Summer deepened and the Healer often found herself stationed with Botkin, ready to heal the injured Grisha when they were finished training. This was a job she liked, after all, Grisha were at their best when using their powers.
Her green eyes trailed over the sterilised tools in front of her, her fingers delicately turning them over in order to check they were still usable after the day's work. She could feel herself slipping from reality, observing nothing but the cool metal sliding in her hands as her brain began to send itself into overdrive.
Nikolai's words from that night echoed in her mind constantly, would there even be a forever? She didn't know, she'd fought against the Darkling at sea and saints knew that he seemed to be indestructible. They were acting like school children gearing up to see who would win the egg and spoon race. Only, the Darkling was the individual holding the spoon and they were the egg waiting to splatter on the concrete.
Now, it wasn't as if Seraphina had no faith in their side winning. But it was easier to expect the worse, if she expected it to happen then she believed it wouldn't hurt as much when reality came crashing down around her.
This was the worst gamble of her life. She was going to lose it all.
Would it be better to fight and watch as her friends fall to their deaths around her? Or was it easier to run and hide, hoping they'd never look for her again so she could wallow in the self-pity of leaving them before they could leave her?
That was the thing with Seraphina Kostyk, she couldn't stop running. No matter how hard she tried, her feet would not stop. She could beat the impossible game if she were two steps ahead, but what was she supposed to do when the game seemed to try and swallow her through the ground?
Was she ready to risk it all?
Risk losing Nikolai? Risk losing Zoya? Or Alina? Or David? She wouldn't be able to live with herself if she lost David.
