The wait to see Joe until the next day in school felt long.

"What happened when you went home?" I asked the second he sat down.

"I'll tell you later." He said squeezing my leg under the table and shooting me a smile.

I shot him a look. I wanted to know now.

"Not here." He said.

I waited impatiently all day for my explanation. Joe took the bus home with us that day.

Once the bus pulled up at our stop I grabbed his hand and dragged him off the bus and away from the crowd, "tell me what happened last night!" I demanded.

"Ok." He chuckled, "it actually went ok. Dad had only just got home when I got back so he hadn't spoken to her yet. He said it would be best if he spoke to her by himself first and I was glad to avoid so I went upstairs. I was called down pretty quick. There were a lot of tears and some shouting but I think she's calmed down. She wants to meet you. Says it's only fair if dad got to. I said I'd speak to you though. Only if you want."

It was a lot to process. "Who was crying?" I asked.

"Mum." He answered looking at me funny like that was a strange thing to ask.

"And she wants to meet me?" I was shocked by this, "again." I added, thinking we had met before.

"That's what she said. And she said she'd be calm."

"And you'd be there?"

"Of course." He squeezed my hand, "I wouldn't leave you. I can probably ask Aunt Carol if she'd come too if you'd want."

"Yeah." I nodded, that was a good idea.

"Ok, so I'll tell her yes?"

I nodded again, feeling very nervous, "when?"

"Saturday I think. I'll check."

"Ok. Aren't you going to work?" I knew he had a shift after school.

"Yes I am." He kissed me, "I'll see you later."

I went home a ball of nerves my mind on going to Joe's house on Saturday. I had been to Joe's house before but I was never suppose to be there. This was different and this could go badly.

I was panicking in my room when I heard someone at the front door and my mum call for me to come down. Thinking it was Joanne I ran down the stairs thankful for the distraction.

I was surprised to see Joe at the door with a huge grin on his face.

"What are you doing here?" I stepped around my mum and looked him up and down in his overalls, he should still be in work.

"Thought we could go out." He said.

"Go have some fun." Mum said.

Joe took my hand and led me down the street.

"What are you really doing here?" I asked him.

"Eimear's mother has taken sick back home."

"Oh no!" I gasped.

"She'll be ok," Joe cut me off, "Alex says so anyway. But they've gone back to Ireland to help her out for a week and they've got a dog. They needed someone to take care of the little guy." He put his hand into his pocket and produced a set of keys.

"Are those to the house?"

"Yep. Alex just showed me around, it's a nice place. They've just left for the airport." We stopped in front of a small but well kept house and Joe walked up to it.
