My phone buzzed again. I looked down to see another text from Riker. I, as I had been doing all week when he texted me, just ignored it and placed the phone back into my pocket.
"Come on Rian cheer up, it's your birthday." CeCe spoke nudging me as we walked up the pavement on our way to the venue.
"Right because I get to spend my birthday with my best friend who is still mad at me, the guy I have feelings for who I told I didn't want to be with, and the girl whose goal is life is to make mine miserable. What could be better right?"
"Why is Rocky still mad at you?" she asked. I rolled my eyes.
"I don't know...It's this whole thing with Riker. Ever since the beginning he's been totally against me liking Riker. He keeps telling me to stay away from him, and how bad of a guy he is. He's just mad about us dancing I guess."
"Are you serious? He's mad that you, and Riker were dancing together?" CeCe asked. I nodded.
"Yea he always thinks he needs to protect me. It's gotten even worse since that night that I came home crying. Now literally every little thing I do with Riker, Rocky gets all defensive about. I get that he's just trying to protect me, but sometimes he acts like a jerk in the process." I admitted. CeCe nodded in agreement.
"Oh yes!" she agreed. "Last week a guy hit on me at the pier, and I was afraid Rocky was going to punch him out." CeCe, and I both let out little spurts of laughter.
"Yea that's Rocky for you, he's always been like that. You don't know how many fights he got into when we were younger because he was trying to protect me."
"I wonder what he'll say when you, and Riker are finally actually dating." I rolled my eyes.
"If that even ever happens..." I sighed. Sometimes it felt like universe was against us. No matter what we did, no matter how we felt about each other, there was always something holding us back.
"In my experience if it's meant to be then it'll happen, and you guys are meant to be." I smiled half-heartedly at her attempt to make me feel better.
"Thanks, but I don't think he's going to like me very much after what happened this last week. I wish I didn't have an iPhone, then he wouldn't be able to see that I've read his texts."
"Or you know you could just respond to them." CeCe suggested. I shrugged.
"I just don't know what to say."
"Rian you can't just avoid him forever. At some point you're going to have to stop running away."
"What? I'm not running away..." CeCe stopped, looked up at me, and crossed her arms.
"Come on, I know you by now. When something upsets you, you run because it's easier to forget about it then to deal with it." I hated to admit it, but truthfully she was right. Running was my specialty, if something upset me it was easier to push it away then to face it.
We finally made our way up to the venue door. Fans were already crowded inside the doors.
"That's too bad Kasey couldn't come tonight." I said attempting to change the subject. She nodded. "She's been pretty distant lately. I don't think she likes me very much." CeCe looked surprised.
"Why do you say that?"
"I don't know just the way she acts." I shrugged it off. I took my phone out of my pocket to view the text I had just received, it was from Rocky.
"Rocky wants us to meet him backstage." I spoke.
"Okay" CeCe replied. Sometimes it was a hassle to get backstage with the fans and the security. One time this guard stopped us from going backstage. "We're with the band" I told the guard. He just chuckled and replied "nice try girls." CeCe tried again. "No you don't understand I'm Rocky Lynch's girlfriend." He responded with more chuckles and "that's what they all say." After a frustrating 20 minutes Rocky actually had to come back and get us. The guard felt pretty bad, but in the end it was kind of funny.
