"What are you doing?"
I opened my eyes at the sound of someone's voice. My boss was standing over me, arms crossed, and a scowl plastered on his face. I jumped up from my chair and began folding up my blanket while I tried to explain myself.
"Uh, well, I was sleeping here cause I have nowhere else to go."
"You get paid, don't you?"
"Not enough", I thought to myself. However, if I actually said that to his face, he would most definitely tell me to get the fuck out of his building. Even though with the way this situation was looking, he's probably going to say that to me anyway. But I've worked too hard at this stupid company to give in now, so I had to at least fight back a little bit for my place here.
"Yes sir, but it's so expensive to live somewhere now that I don't have-"
My employer held his hand up to signify me to stop speaking.
"I don't want to hear your little sob story. The point is, you get paid. And yet, you still don't have enough for living quarters."
I looked down at the ground, feeling very disheartened.
"Not only that but you have violated the employee handbook."
My boss reached into his suit jacket pocket and pulled out that very book. Of course he had that on his person. He started flipping through it until he landed on the page he wanted.
"Section 3-1-4 of Ordinance 21-B states, 'that no employee may stay on the premises after hours. No exceptions'."
He showed me the exact statement in the handbook and then slammed the book shut in my face.
"If I let you violate this handbook, do you know what would happen? Everyone would want to violate this handbook. This is why we have rules, Ms. l/n. So work actually gets done."
"But I am getting my work done, Mr. Hartman! I am doing my job! You've seen me do it!"
My boss looked away with annoyance.
"Be that as it may, you're still in violation of Section 3-1-4."
I didn't respond. I suppose I'd have to be more accepting in my search for a place to live. Well, at least I still had my job.
"So, you're fired."
My attention immediately went back to my boss.
"What?!"
"I said you're fired. I will not tolerate an employee of mine breaking the rules. No matter what the excuse is. Now pack your things and get the fuck out of my building."
There it was. I guess it was inevitable. It was actually ridiculous for me to believe that I could keep having a job here, especially with a boss like this. So, I walked over to my desk while my employer left to get a box for me, I presumed. As I started taking the things off of it, I thought back to when I first began working here. This was the only job I ever had. What would I do now? My boss came back into the room, indeed carrying a box, where he placed it on the desk. He was about to leave again when I stopped him.
"Sir, is there nothing I can do to keep working here? I promise I won't break any more rules. I'll even find a place to live. Just please. Please let me have this job."
There was silence. I couldn't read the expression on his face. Maybe he was going to give me another chance.
"It would be best if you left as soon as possible. It would be quite the embarrassment for you to have to walk past your co-workers with all your belongings in that box."
And with that, he strolled out of the room. I watched him go in shock. What a prick. I turned back to my desk and started putting my things in the box. It wasn't too long before everything was packed away. I picked it up and began leaving the room. As I was going through the open doorway, I gave the room one last look. I had worked at this job for two years. I had hated it. In fact, I should be happy that I wouldn't have to show up here again, but now I really did have nothing. I left the room and started walking through the building to its exit. It was still early, so no one was here yet, thankfully. No one except Mr. Pretentious Douchebag. I hope he chokes on his precious employee handbook.
Once I left the building, I began roaming the streets. I had nowhere to go. Maybe I should just sleep in an alleyway.
No. I was desperate but not that desperate. Besides, I could wake up and really have nothing if someone steals my box of belongings during my slumber. The sun was fully up and people were walking past me by the time something caught my eye.
A newspaper was left on a trashcan. I set my box down next to the trashcan and picked up the newspaper. I started flipping through it, looking for an advertisement for a place to stay. By the time I reached the last page, my hope had severely faded. However, an ad grabbed my attention.
It read, 'Looking for a roommate. Price will be discussed upon arrival'.
It then listed the address and apartment number. This was it. My prayers had been answered. I wouldn't have to be homeless. I would have to get another job soon though. But I'll worry about that later. I set the newspaper in my box and picked it up. I walked over to the edge of the sidewalk and hailed for a taxi.
One eventually pulled up, and I opened the door to the backseat. I placed my box inside and then followed suit, shutting the car door behind me. I was finally on my way.
