It wasn't long before the cave started getting more narrow. Now it was only wide enough for two people standing next to each other. Jessica was still going on about being trapped in the cave too. Did she ever stop talking? I was watching Jessica when all of a sudden Steven started screaming. I turned around and saw him fall down a dip in the water. "Steven! Are you okay?!" Yeah, I'm alright!" Jess looked past me and saw Steven swimming in the water below. "What happened?" "Oh, he just fell down." "Oh. Anyways, like I was saying-" I scoffed and rolled my eyes. I then slid down the dip in the water and landed next to Steven. "Hey." "Hi." "So, what do you think of our new friends?" "Uh yeah, they're...certainly um..." "Annoying?" "I wasn't gonna say that." "Well I'm saying it. I think I'm losing brain cells just being in the same vicinity as them." Steven chuckled. "They're not that bad. Everyone thinks I'm annoying." "Really?" "Yeah. When I first knew Marc and Khonshu, they thought I was an idiot." "Jerks." "Well, they were right. I didn't know a damn thing that was happening." "That's not your fault. How were you supposed to know? Marc had his life and you had yours, right?" Steven nodded. "I know." "What?" Steven looked at me. "Oh, nothing. I was just...nothing." We both fell silent. "Jake still thinks I'm an idiot." "Steven, I'm sure he doesn't actually think that." "He does! I know it!" "Well, I'll get him to think otherwise." "Ha! Good luck with that!" I shook my head and looked up at Jessica and Kyle who were still in the water above us. "Hey! Are you guys ever going to join us?!" They both turned their attention to me. "Why are we going down there?!" "Do you see any other way to go?!" Jessica didn't say anything. "Come on." Kyle went in front of her and jumped. He landed in the water with a big splash. Steven and I covered our faces as water got everywhere. "Geez man. You could've just slid down." "Why do you care? You're already wet." "I know, it's just...whatever." "Are you coming, Jess?!" "Yeah, hold your fucking horses! God!" Jessica got as close to the dip as possible and hopped down. She gave a little yelp as she went down. What a drama queen. She landed in the water and went over to Kyle who held her in his arms. Gross. "What do we do now?" "Keep swimming." Steven started moving as the rest of us followed him. I was still pushing the duffel bag along while Steven still had Jake's gun in his hands. "Do you want a different gun, Steven? Since that one isn't loaded?" Steven looked at the gun. "Oh right. Yeah, that would be a good idea." Kyle scoffed. I ignored him and began fumbling around in the duffel bag for another gun. I pulled one out and swapped it with Steven's current one. I then zipped the bag back up. "Thanks, love." I blushed at the name and nodded my head. "So, you guys are just carrying around guns?" "Yes." "Oh, I mean if I would've known that, I would've just stayed where I was since I don't like guns. They're dangerous." "Yes but how else are you gonna fight off those serpent creatures?" "Just don't fight them. They have families you know. What did they ever do to you?" This bitch could not be serious. I struggled for a response. "Okay. Sure." We kept moving along as the water started getting higher and the ceiling started getting lower. In some places, it was practically up to our necks and we had to squeeze through to not hit the ceiling with our heads. Jessica kept protesting about it the entire time. Like there was anything we could do about it. Kyle soon began joining in the complaining. I was seriously regretting bringing them along with us. "Look, there's nothing we can do! So why don't you just complain to Khonshu about it?! He's the one who sent us to rescue you!" "Khonshu? Is that the Egyptian God of the Moon you were talking about?" "Yes." "Well Khonshu, fuck you! How's that?" I rolled my eyes and shook my head. "You shouldn't have said that." I looked at Steven. So did Kyle and Jessica. "Why not? He's not gonna hear me, is he? Hmm?" "You'd be surprised." "What's that supposed to mean? Are you threatening me?" "No! I'm just saying you should watch what you say! Khnoshu doesn't like to be messed with." "Oh of course. Sorry. My mistake. I'll just do this instead." Kyle then flipped off Steven. Steven stared at him with an unamused expression. "Really?" Kyle shrugged. Steven sighed. "You brought this on yourself." Kyle scoffed. "What's gonna happen? Is this Egyptian god gonna swoop down and kill me?" "He won't need to." A deep voice echoed through the cave. We all looked around for its owner. "What the hell?" Suddenly a serpent came out of the water to the right of me. Jessica started screaming. "Kill it! Kill it!" Steven grabbed my arm and pulled me out of the way as he raised his gun. He began firing it, making the creature howl. However, it didn't seem to be doing any damage. Jessica backed up against the wall, still yelling. The serpent lunged towards her. Kyle dove in front of her and the serpent monster swallowed him. My mouth dropped open in shock. Jessica watched in horror. "KYLE!" The serpent licked its lips and brought its attention back to Jessica. "No, please no! I'm too pretty to die!" Steven tried shooting the creature but the gun ran out of bullets. The serpent darted forward and swallowed Jessica as she gave out a loud cry. Steven and I watched, not knowing what to do. The serpent monster looked at us and began heading our way. "Shit! Steven! What do we do?!" "Swim! Swim for your life!" Steven started swimming like his life depended on it. I followed suit. The serpent shrieked and charged after us. "There's no way we can outswim it, Steven!" "We have to!" We were still swimming when there came a loud wailing from the serpent creature. I turned around and saw Khonshu standing on top of it with his staff driven through its head. "Steven!" "What?!" He turned around and saw what I was staring at. The serpent monster crashed into the water, dead. Khonshu pulled out his staff with a grunt and looked at us. "You're welcome." Steven and I didn't say anything. We were still trying to get over what just happened. "You actually came?" "You can thank your dead friend here for that." "So you heard what he said?" "Why do you think he's dead?" "You're the one who made that serpent show up?!" "No. I'm the Egyptian God of the Moon. Not the Egyptian God of the Sea. I just simply alerted the serpent to your presence." "Unbelievable." "What? Do you really think I'd stand for some deadbeat speaking ill will of me? There's consequences for that. And you should be thanking me. You thought he was a nuisance." "Yeah but I wasn't gonna kill him! And what about his girlfriend? She didn't speak ill will of you." "No but she was obnoxious." "Oh my god." "I really don't see what all the fuss is about." "Right. Okay, just, how about you tell us how we get out of here?" "You keep swimming through. Should be a piece of cake." "Why don't I believe you?" "I don't know. Trust issues?" Kohnshu was certainly testing my patience. "Are you gonna stick around at least?" "Me? No. This is your mission after all." "No, it's Jake's. And he's not even here!" "Now who's fault is that?" I glared at Khonshu. "I see why Marc didn't want to work for you anymore." "Careful there. Say too much, and I'll get another serpent to swallow you. Good luck." And with that, Khonshu disappeared.
