When the car pulled up to the apartment building, I was not expecting it to look as nice as it did. Sure, it wasn't anything fancy, but I was prepared for the worst. The building was pretty high up too.

While I was admiring the building, Jake parked the car and got out. He then opened the door for me. That got my attention and I grabbed my box of belongings. I got out of the taxi, and Jake shut the door behind me.

"Do you like it, señorita?"

"Yes. It looks nice."

"Yeah, I tried to pick somethin' that everyone would like."

I gave Jake a confused look.

"Everyone? Do you have other roommates?"

"Oh, uh...sí. I do."

"Oh. That's cool. How many?"

"Two."

I nodded as Jake walked up to the building entrance. So, he already had roommates. Well, that wasn't exactly a bad thing. Maybe they were as nice as him. I wonder if they were men too. Living with three other men, I don't how that would be. Maybe my life would end up like on New Girl.

"Ready?"

"Hmm?"

I brought my attention back to Jake who had the door open to the apartment building.

"To go in?"

"Oh. Yes. Sorry."

I stepped into the building and began looking around. It was just as nice inside as it looked on the outside. I had only ever lived in houses growing up, but I had stayed at hotels before, so I was slightly used to this style of living. I was still looking around at the interior of the lobby when I noticed Jake had gotten in the elevator and was holding the door open.

I smiled, embarrassed, and rushed over to the elevator. He let go of the door and it quickly shut closed.

Jake then hit the button for the eighth floor, and the elevator started moving up. Everytime it would go up a floor, a ding would resonate throughout the small space. We stood there in silence until my curiosity got the best of me.

"So, how long have you lived here?"

Jake sighed and put his hands in his pockets.

"Roughly two years now, I would say."

"Do you like it?"

Jake laughed and licked his lips. He saw me staring and replied.

"Yeah, it's alright."

I nodded. I hope I wasn't annoying him already. This made me hesitate. I wanted to ask him about his other roommates, but I didn't want to irritate him and then end up not having a place to live again. Especially when this time I was so close.

The elevator door suddenly opened, pulling me out of my thoughts. Jake stepped out and I trailed after him, still carrying my box of belongings. We walked down a hallway until we reached apartment 843. Jake started fumbling around in his pockets.

"Are your roommates not home?"

"No. They're both at work, or they should be."

I nodded as Jake pulled a set of keys out of his pocket. He shook it until he was able to grab the specific key he wanted. He then used it to unlock the door. He opened it, gesturing me to come inside.

I entered slowly, taking everything in. I knew that much like a hotel, you couldn't really alter the original room. Albeit, you probably had more freedom since you actually live in an apartment. But it was still nice. It seemed homely enough. Not that I could judge anyway; I did have nowhere else to go.

The sound of Jake tossing his keys on the counter made me turn my attention to him. He opened the fridge and sighed, scanning the contents. Appearing unsatisfied with what the fridge contained, he turned around to look at me.

"You want anythin'? Food? Drinks? Cerveza?"

"Oh, no, thank you. I don't want to be rude."

"Rude? Disparates! You're my roommate now, you can have whatever you like!"

"...Really? You mean, I can live here?"

"Of course! I thought you knew that. Sí."

I couldn't believe it. I finally had a place to live. And this was much better than I was willing to accept. Not to mention the company.

Jake was certainly charming. His friendliness was beginning to affect me already. I had to be careful. I couldn't ruin our disposition, especially since we just met. Just because someone was showing me basic kindness didn't mean I had to go running into their arms. Was my life really that sad?

"Well, if you won't have anything, the least you could do is put that box down and take a seat. I didn't want to seem brusco earlier, but it looks like you could use some sleep, nena."

I chuckled and saw Jake was looking my way.

"You're right. I haven't been sleeping well. In fact, I haven't been sleeping well for the past two years. I used to sleep at my job. I just got fired though, so no sleep. That's why I came for the ad actually.

"Yikes. It's a good thing you found it then. It's a good thing you found me."

Jake smirked at me as I could feel myself start to blush.

"Yeah, it really is. I really appreciate you letting me live here, Jake. I owe it to you. And I promise, I'll get a job in no time and pay you back."

"No need. There's no charge for rent. And if you want to get a job, that's really all up to you. It's not a requirement."

"Jake. I don't know what to say."

"Don't say anythin'."

Jake walked over to me as he continued to stare right into my eyes.

"You don't have to worry. You'll never have to worry ever again. I'll take care of you. I promise."

I was struggling for words. They all seemed to leave my brain. All I could see was Jake. He was standing right in front of me, the close proximity making my heart start to race. I just wanted him to get even closer. He then leaned in, making me think my prayers were answered. Instead, he took the box out of my hands and placed it on the coffee table behind me.

"Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to get back to my job. I am still a taxi driver after all, but I'll be back. Help yourself to anything you want. TV. Anythin'."

I nodded, a little disappointed that Jake was leaving and so soon. Jake grabbed his keys from the counter and gave me one last look before heading out the door.
