A couple days later, I was at the American Museum of Natural History. I now had a job there working at the gift shop with Steven. Apparently, the only other gift shop worker they had quit, and Steven vouched for me to have the position, so here I was. Nobody was buying anything at the counter, so to pass the time, I was counting the number of penguin plushies that were on a shelf. However, a big crowd outside the gift shop doors drew my attention. I guess the tour was coming to a close and soon they would all flood in here. I looked over at Steven who was watching the group with intense interest. This made me curious. "Steven." He still had his eyes on the group. "Steven." "Yeah?" He looked over at me. "You okay over there? Or do you think someone in that crowd might be a secret agent?" Steven smiled. "Oh, you saw me staring." "Yeah." Steven suddenly started straightening a stack of books on the counter. "I wasn't staring at them, I just..." He sighed. "I guess I was just thinking about something." "Like what?" "Well..." "Hey." Steven glanced up at me. "You can tell me. I don't bite." "Nah, it's silly. Just a silly little dream of mine." "Steven." Steven and I made eye contact. "Your-" "Hi. Just this." A woman placed a shirt down on the counter. I flashed her a smile. "Of course." As I was handling the transaction, Steven was dealing with a customer of his own. The tour was officially over then. After a few more transactions, people stopped coming up to the counter. I brought my attention back to my conversation with Steven. "Geez. Okay, uh I'm sorry, what was I saying?" Steven shrugged. "Well, now I don't remember. How about you just tell me your dream?" Steven didn't say anything. He stared down at the counter. He eventually looked up and spoke. "Alright. I want to be a tour guide here." "That's great. You should do it. You're super smart. I bet you know more than the tour guides do." A grin spread on Steven's face. "Do you really mean that?" "Of course I do. I mean, you know lots of stuff. Especially about Egypt." "Well, Marc tells me that you study Classics. That's quite impressive. And yet, you're here working the gift shop with me and not putting that history degree to any use." I laughed. "You're one to talk. You're the one here with a dream of becoming a tour guide. Not me." "Then, what's your dream?" That made me pause. I had never really thought about it before. I just thought about the basic needs. A place to stay, sleep, eat, work, but never what I wanted to do. After giving it some thought, I gave Steven an answer. "I guess I would like to be a museum curator." "Can you imagine that? You being the curator and me being the tour guide? That'd be like something out of one of those rom coms, innit?" "Yeah, I suppose it would. I wouldn't mind it." "Me neither." Steven and I suddenly made eye contact. "Hey, do you guys have a second?" We both looked away and looked at the actual curator who had walked into the gift shop. "Sure. What's up?" "Have you seen a stuffed elephant anywhere? Apparently some kid left it somewhere and now she and her mother are trying to relocate it." "No, we haven't seen anything." "Huh. Well, thanks. I'll just tell them to keep looking around the museum, but keep your eyes peeled, you guys." "Okay. Oh, Katherine." "Yes?" I glanced over at Steven. He looked at me with a, 'What are you doing?' look. "How much would you say you like your job?" "Excuse me?" "Well, it's just that, it might be nice to be a curator, and I was just wondering-" Katherine scoffed. "Are you trying to take my job, l/n?" "No, of course not. I was just-" "Just stick to the gift shop, okay?" Katherine began walking away. However, I wasn't done. "What about a tour guide?" She turned around and stared at me. "What? You wanna tour guide here?" "Not me per say, but if someone I knew wanted to, could they?" She paused and took a deep breath. "Well, we already have a few tour guides, but I suppose if someone really wanted the position, then yes. They could become a tour guide here. Now, if you excuse me, I have to go back to the concerned mother and daughter before they make a scene." Katherine then left the gift shop. I looked over at Steven. "Well Grant, there's your answer. Looks like being a tour guide is in your future." "I really appreciate the support y/n, but it's not the vacancy of the job that was stopping me, it was my life." "What?" "It's hard to do things when you share your body with two other people. Especially when those other people don't agree on certain things. Like a schedule. You see, I've always wanted to tour guide. Even when I didn't work here, and worked at the British Museum a couple years back. Nothing stopped me back then except for the curator being an absolute wanker. But now that there's Marc and Jake, and they have lives of their own, I can't do it. Do you know how often you have to be here to be a tour guide? Every day. And like three times a day too. So, being a tour guide isn't going to happen anytime soon." It was silent as Steven tried to busy himself with straightening things on the counter while I thought over what he said. Not wanting Steven to just give up on his dreams because of his situation, I gave him a suggestion. "You could tell Katherine that." "What, tell her that I'm mentally ill and share my body with other people? She'll have a laugh, I'm sure. And put me out of a job while she's at it." "No, I mean tell her you can't be here everyday. She said there's a few tour guides here already, so they can just cover the tours you can't guide." Steven scoffed. "Right. Like she'll let me tour guide on my terms. She may not be as bad as the last curator I've worked for, but she's not exactly the Queen of Sheba." "Okay, well, I'm just trying to make you happy, Steven." 'I know and I appreciate it. But there's nothing you can do unless you talk to Jake about shortening his bloody schedule." "Jake?" Steven's eyes widened. "Did I say Jake? I didn't mean him. I meant uh...you know what? Never mind. We should get back to work." "Steven? What about Jake? What has he done?" "He's gonna go after me again." Steven sighed. "Jake has the longest schedule. He says that he's the most important person in this body as well as his job. It's the highest paying, so he believes he should get the most time doing it. I mean, he does have a point, that's why Marc and I haven't done anything about it. That and Jake can be a bit on the aggressive side. But since he spends the most time in this body, it doesn't leave much time for Marc and I." "I have noticed that." "I suppose that's great for you. Since you're dating Jake, but you know, Marc and I can't really do anything with our lives because of it." "I understand. I'll talk to him." "He won't like it. He never does. It always ends the same." "I'll make sure things end differently this time." I gave Steven a smile. He smiled back. "It would mean the world to me." "Then I'll make it happen. I'll make sure you're no longer Steven Grant of the gift shop, but Steven Grant the tour guide."
