"Alright, let's go." I grabbed the duffel bag and started walking towards the water. "What?" I turned back to look at Steven. "Let's go. Let's find a way out of this cave and rescue the people who have gone missing if they haven't been snatched up by those serpents already." "Alright. I'll go first though. Gotta protect the lady." I smiled and shook my head as Steven stepped in front of me. "Wait. Don't forget Jake's gun. You might need it." "I don't really use guns." "Even to save your own skin?" "Nah, that's what running's for. But I'll take it. If I don't Jake will have my head." Steven went over and picked up the gun Jake had tossed. He then began walking in the water. "Oh, that's freezing. How were you and Jake swimming in this earlier?" "Well, we didn't have a choice." "Right." Steven went further into the water until he was no longer standing. I got in the water next to him. He grinned at me. "This is fun, isn't it?" "Swimming in this cold water with scary sea creatures? Not really." "Oh, I forgot about those. We better hurry up and get on dry land again as soon as possible then." "I'm right behind you." Steven and I started swimming through the water. Steven was silent while we were moving. He seemed on edge. He would hear a noise and quickly look in that direction. Even after we had swam for a bit with no problems, Steven still didn't let his guard down. I took my focus off of him and decided to see if there was somewhere we should be going. I looked up and noticed tons of glow worms on the ceiling of the cave. "Steven, look!" "What?! Where?!" Steven raised the gun and pointed it around. "No, it's okay. I just meant at the ceiling." Steven looked up and saw the glow worms. "Oh." He lowered the gun. "Wow. What a lovely sight." "Yeah. You know, I had actually always wanted to do a cave dive." "Well, you got your wish." "Yes, except I didn't picture it happening like this." Steven laughed. "Welcome to the club." Steven faced forward again and screamed. "What?! What is it?!" He raised his gun as he went quiet. I moved next to him and saw what he was looking at. It was a sea of dead bodies. "My god." Steven gently pushed one that was in front of him with his gun. It moved away from him. "Are they all dead?" "I think so." "What should we do?" "I don't know. Marc? What should I do? You're the expert in dead bodies here." I stopped looking at the floating corpses and gazed at Steven. "What does he say?" "He says, just keep going." "Through that?!" "Yeah." "Oh god." "Hey. It's alright. We can do this, yeah? We're brave." Steven didn't look like he was feeling brave. However, he took a deep breath and began moving. I followed him. He pushed the dead bodies aside with the gun as we traversed forward. Eventually we were almost through. Steven was pushing the body of a man around my age out of the way, when he grabbed onto Steven's gun. Steven shrieked and began firing the gun. However, it wasn't loaded. He tried wrestling it out of the body's hand, but he held onto it tight. He slowly sat up and opened his eyes. Steven started panicking even more. "Zombie! Zombie! Zombie!" The body let go of the gun and held up his hands in defense. He tried speaking but Steven was still shouting. "Don't eat my brains! Please, they're all I've got!" The body moved closer to Steven. Steven covered his head and closed his eyes. "Look man, I'm not gonna eat you! For crying out loud." Steven opened his eyes and slowly took his hands off his head. "What?" "I said, I'm not gonna eat you. You watch too many movies, man?" "Yeah, I guess so." I moved past Steven. "You're alive." "Well duh, Captain Obvious. How else would I be talking and moving?" "If you actually were a zombie." The man scoffed. "As if zombies were real. You two are dumb as rocks you know that?" "Hey, that is not true! I am an Egyptologist and I can tell you we are very educated people. So you need to watch your tone, buster!" "Wow. Please tell me you're not my rescue." Steven was about to say something but I spoke for him. "We are. And we were sent by the Egyptian God of the Moon to help you." The man started snickering. "You can't be serious. You're kidding, right? First zombies and now gods? Honestly, how did you guys make it this far?" I scoffed. This guy was really testing my patience. "How did you make it this far? Did you insult the serpents' egos?" "No actually. I did the smart thing. And played dead as you just witnessed." "That is pretty smart." "Thank you, my Egyptologist friend. I'm glad an educated man such as yourself thinks so." "Look, we don't have all day so how about you come with us and we all get out of here? Unless you want to keep chatting and playing dead." I smiled cynically at the man. He returned the smile. "Sure." He then turned his attention to a body of a young woman that was floating close to him. "Jess, get up." She didn't stir. He began shaking her. "Jess, get up!" She suddenly woke up and started flailing around. "What?! What?!" She looked around wildly. She stopped and noticed the man staring at her. "Oh. What is it? I was napping!" "We're moving. Come on." "Moving?" She stood up and saw us. "Who are they?" "Our rescuers." "They don't look like the rescuing type." I rolled my eyes. Too bad the serpents didn't swallow these two. "Now Jess, let's be nice to our rescuers. After all, they're educated people. Sent by the Egyptian God of the Moon." "Whatever." Nobody moved. "Well? Are we going or not?" "Right." Steven started moving. I followed him as the two strays followed me. After a few minutes of silence, I decided to strike up a conversation. "So, what are your guys' names?" "Well, my name is Kyle and her name is Jessica." "We're dating." "Oh. Okay. Was this some romantic getaway?" "Fuck no. Kyle wanted to be a man and go in this cave since it's supposed to be like the hardest or something. I wanted nothing to do with it. But he was like, 'babe, you know I can't do this without you.' And so I tagged along. I should've known that it was a mistake as soon as I saw the fucking entrance!" Kyle laughed awkwardly. "Aww Jess, don't get upset. We'll be out of here shortly." "I fucking hope so! We've been here for god knows how long! Days? Weeks? I don't fucking know! I bet nobody even fucking cares I'm missing!" "Babe, you know that's not true. Lots of people love you. All your friends. What about Ronnie? I bet she misses you. Or Taylor. Or Jennie." Kyle kept trying to comfort Jessica as she avoided his gaze, sniffling. I sighed. This was going to be a long journey.
