While waiting for Jake to return, I decided I would take up his offer and have something to eat. I also turned the TV on, but shut it off again after a few minutes since there was nothing good to watch.
I then resolved to explore the apartment. I was a little hesitant at first. I didn't want to invade the privacy of Jake and his roommates, but I would be living here from now on, so I figured familiarizing myself with it wasn't a crime.
I walked into the connecting room of the living room. It was a bedroom. All it had though was a bed, dresser, closet, nightstand, and a connecting bathroom. The walls were bare, and there was nothing on the nightstand except for a lamp. It was a little sad honestly, but who was I to judge? It's not exactly like my last place of residence was high living.
I left the room and went back out into the living room. There was a room that connected with the kitchen. I stepped through the open doorway and saw that this room was much smaller than the first bedroom. A lot uglier too. While the walls still had the same shade of white, and were also bare, the floor had old looking beige carpet that felt a little gross to walk on. Whoever had this bedroom certainly got screwed. This room also had a closet, nightstand, dresser, and connecting bathroom. I guess Jake and his roommates were people who liked to live very plainly.
I went back into the kitchen and noticed it had another connecting room on the opposite side. I walked over to it and was about to open the door when the front door opened.
I retreated from the door and stood next to the kitchen counter as Jake walked into the apartment.
He was taking off his cap and gloves when he saw me standing there. He smiled and threw them on the counter, walking over to me. He stopped right in front of me as he dug in his pockets and pulled out his keys, which he also threw on the counter.
Waiting for him to say something, I was starting to feel nervous with him so close to me. It was almost like he was doing it on purpose. He walked away from me and over to the fridge, opening it.
"Did you miss me, cariño?"
He pulled out a bottle of Corona and shut the fridge door, turning around to face me as he leaned on the kitchen counter, clearly waiting for me to respond. I blushed and avoided his gaze.
"Well, it was a bit lonely here without any company."
Jake chuckled as he opened the bottle of Corona and took a swig of it.
"Apologies, nena. This is the city that never sleeps. And I had a job to do. Trust me, I didn't want to leave your cara bonita all alone here either."
Jake took another sip from his drink and got off the counter. He strolled over to me, stopping just right in front of where I was standing. Geez, he was tall. The way he loomed over me and had to look down at me to maintain eye contact certainly made me feel anxious.
I nodded, trying desperately not to look at his face. He smirked and walked past me. He plopped down on the couch and noticed the bag of Takis I had left on the coffee table next to my stuff.
"I see you did help yourself. And of course, it had to be my stash of Takis."
"Oh. I'm sorry. I didn't-"
Jake held up his hand.
"It's alright, cariño. It's my fault. And here I was hoping you'd eat somethin' of Steven's."
Jake sipped his drink again as I thought over what he said. Steven. That must be one of his roommates.
"Steven? Is that one of your roommates?"
Jake was silent briefly almost as if he hadn't meant for that to slip out for me to catch.
"Sí. He is."
