Marinette knew where she was, but that didn't make it any less frightening.

Paris was no more. Rubble from the destruction lay at her feet.

The sky was ashy as if it hadn't seen the sun in many months.

From afar, she heard a faint humming.

She's been through this before. She just had to reach the end of the dream to wake up. So why couldn't she bring herself to make her legs move? She needed it to be over already. But she just couldn't.

Her body trembled, thinking about the sight she was about to see.

She willed herself to move towards the source of the humming and she saw him.

His back was turned to her, legs dangling over the river port.

"Little kitty on a roof, all alone without his..."

Chat Blanc froze and turned around. He gave that eery smile that was the source of Marinette's every waking thought. She's had this same dream repeatedly over the past months, ever since she first encountered Chat Blanc. However, she could never get used to it. Never bring herself to get used to it.

"M'lady!" Chat Blanc stood up and rushed to Marinette excitedly, "I was wondering when you would be back!"

Marinette learned not to trust his enthusiasm.

Her heart broke seeing her partner like this. His cold, detached eyes felt as if they were piercing her soul. She couldn't bear to see those eyes. She missed the warm, loving Chat Noir's eyes which looked at her as if she was his whole world.

"Marinette? Why are you looking at me like that? Aren't you glad to see me?" Chat Blanc asked, still walking closer and giving his emotionless smile.

But that was the problem. It wasn't emotionless. She wanted to believe it was, but she knew better than that.

Pain.

He was in so, so much pain.

That's why she hated seeing him.

Marinette closed her eyes, not wanting to see her partner like this any longer.

"M'lady. Open your eyes. Look at me," Chat Blanc demanded coldly.

Marinette glanced back at him and he smiled again, "There we go. I love it when you smile. You used to smile at me all the time. I wish you would remember."

Marinette shuddered. What had happened to her and Chat Noir in the alternate timeline? She knew she shouldn't ever find out since Chat Blanc clearly knows her true identity, and she wouldn't want to risk that in her current timeline.

"If you just give me your Miraculous everything could be fixed. We could be happy again. Don't you want that?" Chat Blanc reasoned. He held her gaze and took another step toward her. Marinette couldn't bring herself to step back. The longing in his eyes and voice made her tear up.

"I'm sorry, kitty," she finally spoke, "I don't know why you ended up like this, but I'm so sorry."

Chat Blanc looked at her sadly, "That doesn't fix anything. If you're really sorry, give me your Miraculous."

He lunged forward, trying to grab her earrings. Marinette dodged and called out, "Tikki! Spots on!"

Ladybug and Chat Blanc fought, but Ladybug couldn't bring herself to remember the details. She would rather forget ever fighting her partner than remember.

What felt like a lifetime later, Ladybug finally had Chat Blanc pinned to a broken slab of a building.

He gave her one final smile and said, "Till next time, m'lady."

Marinette woke up from her dream with a start.

Adrien sighed for what felt like the millionth time that day. His father was away on a trip to Hong Kong, leaving him with Nathalie and his bodyguard. He was sitting on his couch, playing video games, bored out of his mind.

Plagg was playing with him on another controller, a piece of Camembert next to him.

"Do you really have to have that stinky cheese on the couch when you play?" Adrien exasperatedly questioned.

Plagg rolled his eyes, too focused on beating Adrien to give a snarky comeback.

"Aha! I win! You lose! This is the power of the beautiful and delicious Camembert," Plagg announced proudly.

Adrien sighed again. This was the tenth time in a row that Plagg beat him.

"Ugh, if you're that bored, why don't you go visit one of your friends?" Plagg questioned.

"You know I can't do that. Nathalie would never let me..." he trailed off, realizing what he could do.

"Hehe...Plagg, claws out!" he called.

"Wait— No— That's not what I meant—" Plagg's voice faded as he got sucked into Adrien's ring.

Chat Noir hopped onto his window railing and extended his baton to get to a random building's rooftop. He allowed himself to enjoy the soft breeze and fool around for a few minutes, going wherever he felt in the moment.

He hadn't realized he eventually landed on a very familiar building until he saw one of his best friends crying.

Marinette was sobbing into her hands, sitting on the ground of her balcony.

"Marinette?" Chat Noir worriedly approached her, "Hey, what's wrong? Are you okay?"

Marinette glanced up with wide eyes, seeing Chat Noir on her balcony.

She lunged forward and hugged him, holding him as if he would disappear if she released him even slightly.

Chat Noir was surprised, to say the least, but hugged her back.

Marinette might not always open up to him when he's Adrien, but he knew that the two of them were still close friends.

Whatever was bothering Marinette, he would do anything he could to help her with it.

He kept holding on to her and directed them onto one of the chairs on her balcony. They stayed like that, hugging each other for who knows how long.

Chat Noir didn't try to speak or move away from her tight grasp. He simply allowed Marinette to cry her heart out onto his shoulder.

Marinette finally felt safe. This was her partner. The kind, loving, warm Chat Noir. He would never do anything to hurt her if he could help it.

"If he could help it..." Marinette repeated to herself, "No, don't think about it. It's best not to know."

She pulled Chat Noir even closer if that was possible, and tried to get her breathing under control.

Unbeknownst to them, a certain villain was finishing signing a contract with a new friend.

"Now that I have all the Miraculous and more people on my side, I'll definitely be able to bring you back, Emilie," thought Hawk Moth.
