Dear Mum,
I haven't been in touch in so long because I've been very busy with school. I got my report card today and you'll be glad to know my grades are good everywhere except for maths, which Nona said she'd help me with.
Gigli and Lola are outraged with me right now. Not due to my grades (although Elena's mum was fuming when she compared my report card to her daughter's).
It's all to do with that goblin story that I told them wasn't even true.
It starts with Lola blaming me for this "night of horror" she spent at the weekend. This is after she helped her dad to drop off a couple of bags full of rubbish. Basically, when Lola's dad approached the bin, she noticed the lid hadn't been put back on properly after it was last emptied by the collectors. Her dad ignored her warning that there could be "something evil living in the bin" and he started lifting the metal lid off the half-open container. It clanged a little as he moved it and this long screech erupted from the belly of the bin, followed by frantic scratching noises.
Lola goes absolutely mental, screaming and grabbing her father's arm. She implores him to run with her, hell-bent for their home, and not to bother with the full bin bags. The goblin was sure to murder them both before they got a chance to place them inside the metal bin.
Lola's dad tried to reason with her, but she screamed bloody murder until people started lifting their curtains by the corner, to stare at them while they stood on the curb by the bins.
Finally, Lola's dad convinces her to go home without him because he's not scared. Lola waits for the longest, most gutting minutes of her life. Her dad then walks through the door and tells her it was a small rodent in the bin, not a homicidal goblin.
Is it alright that I find this story funny?
