Chapter 10:

continued from 9...

The girls loved when we visited. In fact, it was them who told us about the spare key under the mat. I found it kind of weird that a six year old and a four year old knew where the key was, but hey, whatever works in that family, right? Right.

"Kayla, why'd you give Kale up?"

"I don't know," She mumbled after thinking for a moment.

"It hurt him."

"I know, Han. I do,"

"We wouldn't be here, right now, crying, if you hadn't given him up!"

"But, you wouldn't have know him, if I didn't."

"I guess,"

"Don't cry, darling. He'll be OK."

"He had surgery."

"I thought he didn't want that--"

"He didn't. But, it was the only way for him to wake up! He was in a coma before you got here! He had lost too much blood. The surgery saved him. It was the only way, and he hates me for it."

"He doesn't hate you."

"He told me that I need to leave his room because I'm a bitch."

"He's just upset,"

"I know, but it hurts,"

"I know, baby."

"Kayla?"

"Mm?"

"Thank you."

***

I pushed open Kale's door.

"Kale?"

"What do you want?" His eyes felt like they were buring into me.

They were filled with hatred.

"Do you really think I'm a bitch?"

His eyes softened, and I could have sworn a tear dripped down his cheek.

"C'mere."

"No. Do you really think that?'

"C'mere," he mumbled again.

I walked over to him and cuddled against his chest. He wrapped his arms around me and kissed the top of my head.

"I could never hate you.

"I know. I'm sorry I was such a bitch."

"You weren't a bitch. I was an ass."

"You weren't an ass, you were a penis. There's a difference."

He smiled at me.

"Yes, I know. I'm a dork!" He laughed, kissing my head again.

"I love you, dork."

"Love you too, female dog."

I laughed a little and tried to kiss his lips, but he pulled back.

"Easy there, kiddo. I'm not supposed to kiss you after I take that medicine."

"Ohh,"

"Yeah, but I will anyway." He smiled, bending down to peck my lips.

The machines started beeping again, and his heart rate spiked up, but this time we ignored it.

"Your heart speeds up when you kiss me?"

"Yours doesn't?"

"I just thought I was the only one."

"Nope, it always does that."

"Aww!"

He smiled.

***

"Ready to go?" He asked impatiently.

"Are you sure it's a good idea for him to leave?" I nerviously asked the doctor.

"He's made a great recovery. While I recommend staying at home tonight, the aquarium won't kill him. Take it easy, Kale."

"Yes Doc. I'll be back tomorrow afternoon for my checkup."

"Sounds good, Kid. You be careful and call me if anything happens."

"Of course, Doc. Thank you," I reassured him.

***

"Aw! Isn't he cute?!" I giggled, pressing my hands against the glass.

Mia, Skye, and I watched the sea otters swim back and forth while Ryan, Kale, and Cameron (Mia's college boyfriend) talked behind us. Out of no where, Kale started coughing.

"You alright, man?" I heard Ryan ask.

We turned around just in time to see Kale fall to the ground, coughing, gasping for air.

"Call 911!" I screamed, running over to him.

"Kale!" Cam called out, trying to keep him up.

"Does anyone know CPR?" I cried out.

"I do," Cam answered, begining CPR on Kale.

"The paramedics are on their way." Skye informed me.

I watched Kale's eyes close as he continued to gasp for air.

"I love you, Hanna." He mumbled, before his unusal breathing stopped.

"He doesn't have a pulse!" Cam screamed.
