Porter
The wind blew my shaggy brown hair around my eyes as I squinted into the field. I needed to get this cow back before this storm ruined all the chances I had left. If only the rest of those damn cows hadn't busted through my new fence, the one that cost basically my life savings. But I'd be damned if one cow was going to ruin my night. Especially when I know there's a cold beer waiting for me.
"Down on the right!" I yelled before nudging my horse Ace in the side. He instantly took off and I couldn't help but smile while feeling his sheer power beneath me. He sped off so fast he almost knocked the cowboy hat off my head, luckily it stayed on. The last thing I wanted to do was have to go shopping for a new one. One of the worst things in the world was shopping.
"Got eyes on the little shit," Jeremy's voice said behind me.
I didn't have to turn around to know where he was, I knew he was on my left. Nudging Ace in the side again, I raised the lasso above my head and just made it onto the cow before it could run away. Jeremy let out an excited whoop as the cow simply glared at me. Smug little bastard.
By the time we rode back to the farm the skies opened and heavy rain fell onto my body, completely soaking my thighs. These jeans will be fun to take off. With a sigh I hoisted myself out of the saddle and landed onto my feet, taking the cow into the barn with me. The rest of the cows simply looked up but didn't seem to care too much that their buddy had returned.
"How much do you think that fence will take to fix?" Jeremy asked as he started untacking our horses.
"Too damn much," I said while taking my wet cowboy off and brushing the hair out of my eyes.
He grumbled as well before his eyes looked over at me. It was very obvious that Jeremy and I were twins, we were pretty identical. We both had shaggy brown hair and a pair of green eyes we inherited from our father. If only he was still here today. Our mother was still around but she was a whole different mess. I'd always be grateful to have someone to connect to like Jeremy.
"What if we ask Kurt?"
"Dude," I said while sitting down onto a bale of hay. "We can't do that."
He gave me a look, the one Kurt used a lot, while his horse shook next to him. "Why not? This is still his ranch Port. And he still gets updated about everything and makes decisions." With a frown he glanced down at his hands before shoving them into his pockets. "He even said just because he's in the hospital nothing has changed."
The silence that followed made me frown as my eyes fell to the floor. Kurt was like a second father to us and having him be in the hospital made us both think about our father. I don't want to lose another parent. But I also didn't want Jeremy to be upset. While we may be twins, I was still older by ten minutes and had always been protective of him. Which was why I sighed and looked up at him while saying, "Fine. Let's go talk to him."
Jeremy finally smiled as I stood up and cracked my back. After the horses were put away and everything was taken care of we made our way inside the farmhouse. I instantly made a beeline over to the fridge and got one beer and a Coke out as our two dogs ran into the room.
"Heads up," I said before chucking the Coke over to Jeremy who instantly grabbed it. "Alright I'm done for the night. If another cow escapes don't wake me."
I heard a chuckle while leaving the kitchen and making my way upstairs, continuing to drink as I walked. Once in my bathroom I stripped down and turned the shower on, waiting until it heated up. My eyes wandered towards the mirror where I frowned. Damn, I need to shave. My hand ran over my scruffy face as the ink on my bicep made me look down. The two dates calmed me down before sliding into the shower and groaning from the heat.
