A chilling sensation spread through my body, like a raindrop that I simply couldn't dry on my skin.
Caelus was so calm, as if the darkness was a place where he felt safe, it was familiar to him.
I, on the other hand, was beginning to doubt whether I should keep walking.
But I couldn't stop now, I couldn't turn back.
We were under the ground.
And yet it seemed to be a cave.
An underground cave, it was.
The green fairy led us towards what seemed to be the end of the great tunnel, deep into the underground cave.
At last she turned around, and faced us.
'Are you ready?'
Her question knocked the air out of my lungs, but Caelus remained just as composed. Perhaps there was nothing to fear. I wasn't sure. My instinct was telling me something very different to what my head was saying.
'We're here, aren't we?' Caelus replied as arrogantly as ever.
The fairy smiled mischievously, anticipating only worse things with just a gesture.
'Alright.'
She raised her arms and everything around her shook.
The earth began to fall like a storm of rubble.
The fairy's eyes turned white, clouds were drawn into her pupils.
'By trusting your companion, you will be ready to advance, but you will not be able to avoid the next trial. In the darkness of the cave, your worst monsters you shall face, and only courage will let you survive and to the last test finally arrive. Three chances shall you be given, for the darkness to fight. If you cannot, there you will stay, wrapped in fear and darkness feeding the power of the cave.'
Braveness. This test was about braveness.
I didn't quite understand how we were supposed to face our worst monsters, or even what it meant to do so.
I watched Caelus' expression and noticed a slight disturbance in his seemingly eternal confidence.
He was nervous.
'Do you accept the test?' the fairy asked us, just as each of those who presented us with the tests did.
I knew we should say yes, but I really didn't want to, I didn't want to find out what her words meant, nor was I ready to....
'We'll do it,' Caelus sentenced with a slight vibration in his voice.
He wasn't sure about doing it either.
That gave me a bit of relief and concern at the same time.
The fairy smiled.
She was enjoying this.
