John B had been under the water for a couple of minutes and in the meantime, the Pogues waited on the boat. Stevie sat shivering slightly after jumping in and leaving her t-shirt on the chain of the anchor.
"You cold?" JJ asked. He didn't ask in a way that made it seem like they were about to argue or in a sincere way. I was just neutral.
"No," Stevie lied as she held her own arms around her body. JJ could tell she was lying and he smiled slightly to himself as he reached for his zip-up hoodie. He placed it on her lap without saying anything. He turned to walk away from Pope but Stevie stopped him. "I don't want your jumper," She smiled shaking her head and handing it back to him. He picked it up and threw it back at her.
"Just take it," he sighed, "does everything have to be an argument?"
She gave a small shake of her head before taking the jumper and wrapping it around herself. It was a nice gesture between frienemies. She felt slightly in a daze and her body was buzzing with warmth however her heart dropped for the whoop of a police boat.
"Shit JJ," Pope noticed the siren too.
"Guys that's the police," JJ clarified although everyone knew and Stevie had never felt more nervous. She promised Peterkin that she wouldn't go out into the marsh. She needed to keep that promise so she could stay in the Outerbanks.
"Guys they can't see me here," Stevie panicked taking off JJ's jumper and placing it on the seat before moving to slip off the edge of the boat. Luckily the police seemed far enough away for there to slip away without them noticing.
"Are you crazy?" JJ whisper-shouted at her.
"Maybe," she smiled "They can't see me out here," she replied hanging off the boat in the water. She didn't really have much of a plan but hopefully, if she just hung off the boat and moved at the right times she'd be fine. "Please just distract them"
"You're the bane of my existence," JJ sighed.
As the boat came closer Stevie panicked more but she believed in herself. Routledge's were known for getting out of impossible situations and this was no different. The rest of the Pogues acted naturally as they tied off the police boat to their own. They hadn't noticed John B in the water or Stevie yet so it was looking positive.
"The marsh is closed," Stevie heard Shoupe tell the group which was responded by a chorus of uh no's and I didn't know.
"Why's it closed?" Pope asked trying to seem natural.
"We're conducting a search. Boat went down," Shoupe replied. They talked further about whether the Pogues had seen it and of course, they lied. Stevie felt ok about the situation until Shoupe questioned where they were. "where're the siblings you normally hang out with?"
"They're working," Kie lied quickly trying not to arouse any suspicion.
Stevie didn't feel like she was in much danger until Shoupe got on the boat to look around. If he walked around the boat he would see her treading water or holing to the front and she panicked. The only thing she could think to do was swim down. She took a deep breath and hoped for the best.
As she swam down she saw John B at the safety stop she made earlier. He looked confused and scared for the girl. He had no idea why she was under the water with him but when she pointed up the police boat he started to piece it together.
The girl was struggling for air and didn't know if she was going to last any longer. John B hurt inside seeing his sister look as though she was going to lose consciousness so he took a deep breath with the mask and then he put it on his sister hoping that she could breathe the last bits of air.
