"It was Mr Cameron that convinced me to ask her out," JJ fakely admitted.
Stevie took a step forward and placed a soft peck on his lips and muttered as she pulled away "I'm so glad he did"
What. I'm pretty sure my heart stopped. Why did she look at me like that? Why did she smile as she leaned into my lips? Why did she kiss me? She kissed me. I never knew how much I missed her till her lips parted from mine leaving the slight tingling of anticipation. What does she mean? What does she want? I don't think there will ever be a day when I figure her out, but I'd happily spend my life trying.
"Look, we'll be quiet," John B interrupted the tense silence after Stevie's surprise kiss on JJ. "Well finish up here. Sorry to bother you," John B encouraged the man to move on, hoping he'd been fooled by the love story, which it seemed he had.
"Have a good night sir," Pope smiled till the man was out of view and earshot," What the hell was that?" Pope turned to Stevie whose face was still flushed red after reeling she had kissed JJ.
"I don't know," Stevie flounced her arms in confusion, "I'm so sorry," She turned to JJ, guilt creeping in that she had played with his emotions and afraid she had got his hopes up.
"Oh no... yeah no... no it's cool," JJ tried to play it off but his repetition of no gave him away, he had gotten his hopes up a tiny amount. He had wished she had a part of her that changed her mind. "It's fine Evie,"
"JJ stop calling me Evie," She asked again, confirming she had not changed her mind. She took two steps back from the group, still with flustered cheeks, and explained, "Look, I was just trying to get the man to leave us alone, and I succeeded so you're welcome. At least one of us is smart,"
"Hey!" Pope complained.
Stevie rolled her eyes before turning her attention back to the wall, "Anyway, Sarah and the cross," She smiled at the boys who quickly remembered why they were there and watched as they sprung into action, jumping over the wall and heading to the truck.
Stevie was happy to divert the attention. The longer they looked at her the longer her cheeks stayed flushed, a clear indicator that she was not over it as she had claimed. The small part of her that changed her mind, that JJ had hoped existed, did. It was there. And kissing him didn't help it to go away. He had a slightly scratchy face, with chapped lips and a small stubble that tickled Stevie's face as she lent in. Even with his imperfection he was still able to spread chills down Stevie's body just as she had made his lips tingle.
"That's Rafe," Stevie saw the blonde boy walk out of the house towards the truck, with no sign of Sarah's presence. The tension became too much for John B who, against everyone else's judgement, attempted to charge at the boy.
"Get down!" JJ whisper-shouted at John B before pulling him back and maintaining their cover behind the bushes, "No, wait! Not yet!"
"What's the plan then!" He turned to JJ.
"John B he might have a gun so let's just slow down please before another one of us gets shot," Stevie scowled at her brother, worried he would do something stupid.
"What's in your favour?" JJ asked but didn't expect a response. The question was kinda silly, they had nothing on them, only more numbers. "The element of surprise, thats whats in our favour right now"
Whilst JJ and John B argued back and forth about a plan and the best way to surprise Rafe to their advantage, Pope grew restless. He watched the van go past and grew bitter that he had lost the cross again, but he would not accept it this time. That was his family's cross, his legacy, his heritage, and he'd be damned if he let it slip into Rafe Cameron's hands. So whilst the other two argued, Pope ran. Only Stevie noticed his absence
