The Beast of His Mind

Yoongi was the son of a king who cherished his land and ruled with an iron fist. He remembered the grin on his father's face as he went around town, greeting commoners with his famous charm and words. Yoongi admired it as a kid. In a way, he tried implementing that style into the way he led his people. But at the end of the day, he needed to make leadership his own. And that was why he was so concerned for Prince Jin - the one who should be King Jin.

It had been a week since the new kingdom arrived, and for 7 days straight, Jin came and visited Yoongi. He talked about how he sent a team out to find the neighboring kingdoms, or at least one of them. The odds were they'd be back in about two or three more days, which left Jin alone with no ambassador. No diplomat to handle the politics of leading. Yoongi didn't need to know Jin to know how much sleep he was losing over that.

Each day since they left, Jin made jokes about losing his mind without his two diplomats, Jimin and Namjoon. He also made jokes about dying in his sleep because his knight, Commander Jung, wasn't there to protect him. And of course, there was the absence of his spy, Jeon Jungkook, that made him feel like there might have been a traitor amongst his people. Apparently Jin needed Jungkook to determine that, and not just... anyone else.

Now Yoongi was sitting at the mouth of the cave, letting the sun wash through his hair while Jin was blabbering on about how healthy the stew he gave Yoongi was. Yoongi already forgot what it was called. He felt bad about not remembering the names, but cooking wasn't his thing. He couldn't remember how to make anything back when he was in charge. His wife was in charge of most of that. Funny how times had changed.

"Are you done talking about cooking?" Yoongi asked when Jin finally shut his mouth.

The prince was donning an unusual outfit. Normally he would wear darker colors that resembled robes and dress attire. Instead, he had armor on with tawny shoulder pads, chains of gold running down his neck and chest until it met his belt. The silver armor was glittering from the speckles of water dripping down the sides, Jin keeping his wide shoulders set. Even when Yoongi was a king, he rarely donned armor. So why Jin was wearing such armor was outside of Yoongi's comprehension.

"Maybe," Jin mumbled, crossing his arms over his chest and staring at the horizon. "I fear enemies will come soon, and when they do, I won't have my lead knight with me."

"He'll be back soon. You still have the rest of your guard, don't you?" At his nod, Yoongi pointed as if his finger made his point a fact. "Don't worry too much about it, okay? Your guard is there to help you and cherish you. Is that why you're wearing thick armor instead of your robes?"

"I'm a prince, but I'm no fool. If enemies could be around every corner, I'd much rather be wearing armor. Especially when my best fighter is gone. I wasn't expecting Jimin to pick such a large team, but hopefully it'll be worth it. I just have to get past the nerves first."

"I know my opinion doesn't matter much, but I hope you know that you seem to be doing a good job so far. Leading your people, I mean. But also don't feel pressured to keep coming to me. I'm not your priority, you don't have to treat me like one."

Jin chuckled and glanced at Yoongi, waving the air. "You're a priority to me, Mr. Min. This kingdom was once yours, and when I was walking through the streets the first day we arrived, I was horrified. I can't imagine what you had to go through. For whatever my words are worth, I am truly sorry for your losses. I hope one day you can gain a new family, and that maybe we can help you find one. This cave isn't good for you, but I won't force you to come outside it if you're not ready to face others."

"I'm not," Yoongi said, a bit too quickly. "Facing people in my kingdom may bring back memories. I don't want to."

"And you don't have to." Jin took a risk and placed a hand on Yoongi's shoulder. He flinched, but he relaxed and let the prince offer him consolation. "Take whatever time you need, even if that means you won't come out until we've been settled in for over a year. Or two. Or even ten. Do whatever you have to do to keep yourself stable. I just want to remind you that there's always a place for you in our kingdom. And I'll still bring you meals every day, how about that?"
