That's Why We Believe

Meeting Jin's inner circle was something Yoongi expected, but it was strange to see them all together in one place, especially only a day after the attack. Taehyung was next to Yoongi as a fire burned not far in front of them, the 7 of them out behind the castle, nearby where Yoongi's wife was buried. He attempted not to feel the sting those words brought, and it did work to a certain extent. Primarily because Taehyung handed him a block of cheese that likely came from their goats. They didn't have many animals, but enough to supply dairy foods like the one Tae was holding.

"I didn't poison it. Probably," Tae said, nudging Yoongi as if that would convince him to take it.

It worked, and Yoongi munched on the tiny block of flavor. He was getting stares from everyone, but they pretended it wasn't happening by whispering to one another. There were 4 different conversations happening all at once. Jin was speaking with Jungkook about what Yoongi assumed was the attack, and the others were scattered around in the circle they were sitting in. Yoongi was having trouble remembering their names, and he knit his brows together.

"Do I need to remind you again?" Tae asked, and Yoongi huffed to signal that was a yes. Taehyung gulped down his water and wiped his lips with the back of his hand before pointing. "You see the hot one? That's Hoseok."

Yoongi blinked. "Okay...?"

"Next is Jimin, the one pretending he wants to be here instead of drowning in alcohol and doing his wife."

"Do you feel the need to tell me that?"

"A little actually, yeah." Yoongi gave him a glare, but Taehyung only shook it off and chuckled, moving his finger over to Jin. "Do I need to say it? Our dashing prince, and Jungkook is next to him. After that is Namjoon, and of course, you and me."

"I think I got it. I'm just amazed we aren't attracting any creatures of the night."

"They're rare, aren't they?" Tae asked, Yoongi sighing and picking at the grass.

"They are, but high activity from humans draws them out," Yoongi replied, pondering the best way to answer that question. "Creatures of all breeds are pretty much extinct, but there are a few survivors. Humans destroyed most, but not all. Like the one that executed my people. I wish I could believe it was dead, but deep down, I know that's not true."

"And if it comes back?"

Yoongi shifted to him, and Tae deflated as if he said something too personal. "What would you do?" Yoongi asked, Taehyung letting his mouth fall open, but no words came out. "If a creature of that speed and strength came here to attack your people, I'm curious. What would you do?" He didn't mean it in a hostile way, but it had been so long since Yoongi had consistent conversations with people. He was sure he was coming off as the bitter old man, but Taehyung was quick to ease his worries by shooting Yoongi a soft smile.

"I don't know, but what I do know is that I'd want you with me."

"You barely know me."

"Maybe, but that doesn't change how I want to know more."

"Why?"

The single word was more of a cry, a sign that Yoongi coming out of that cave was a mistake. But Taehyung came closer, brushing off any glances his friends cast in their direction. It was a subtle gesture, but it was like an outstretched hand. A hand beckoning Yoongi to break down his walls and trust in Taehyung. In Jin. In the rest of the group around him. However, this wasn't a fairytale. As much as Yoongi would love to collapse into Taehyung's arms and sob about the horrors he had to endure, he knew he had to remain strong for however long he could. Even if that length was forever.
