Mirror

Yoongi had a cloud of smoke as a mind at the moment. Every memory he locked away was playing out in front of him, blurring the line between fiction and reality. He attempted to get a hold of himself, to grasp the air with his lungs, but not a single tactic he tried prevailed. The burgundy eyes were all too familiar, and Yoongi had to bite back his wails. His tears scorched his flesh as they dribbled down his cheeks, the crevasses of his skin bubbling with fury.

The monster that destroyed his home was facing him down. It could have been a different monster, but it carried a sense of familiarity. A sense of dread that Yoongi had for over a year in that cave. He held those fears so close to him that it became a part of himself. He cherished them dearly, and now, he had to let them go. Otherwise, Shadowcrest and all Yoongi had learned to love would be annihilated overnight. And he'd be left alone again. A repeat of all his nightmares.

"Not this time," Yoongi whispered, planting his feet and holding a sword he scavenged from inside the castle. There were plenty of extras from the knights they captured plus the ones who died. Yoongi could have took two if he wanted, but he preferred a stronger stance over a faster attack. He'd need the strength if he were to face a mass of power such as the one across from him.

It snarled in response, and Yoongi almost cursed at it, but he had to focus. Becoming overwhelmed with anger would only end with Yoongi on the ground in a pool of his own blood. Like Jimin with his rage against Sebastian. He kept his stance and let the seconds tick by. The thing across from Yoongi didn't move. And neither did the monster...

Within a flash, the battle commenced. A second ticked away. Then another. The pendulum in Yoongi's mind swung as the beast inside him erupted from his soul in a blaze of fire. His sword seemed to move on its own, and the fury he had pent up from a year of isolation shrieked its way through Yoongi's lungs, flying into the air in the form of a battle cry.

His sword blocked the claw coming from the creature, the thing moving at what felt like the speed of light. The claw ripped through the air and almost knocked Yoongi over. He held his ground, his feet digging into the gravel. What felt like screams fell out of his open mouth, more blocking and attacking alternating between the sides. Yoongi struck once. Then the beast. Then Yoongi. The beast. It was a game, almost. At least, it felt that way in Yoongi's mind. One minute he was attacking, the next he was groaning as he took hits.

Blood dripped down his shoulder from the sheer force of the claws hitting his sword. It tore his muscles apart and made him screech, his weapon barely denting the creature's foggy skin. The flesh underneath the layer of fog protecting it was impossible to see, and Yoongi had to guess and pray each time he landed a blow. Speaking of, the next blow landed on the monster's arm. Yoongi managed to snap off a single claw, the animal howling in despair.

Yoongi prepared to strike again, but as it turned out, the giant was pretending to be hurt to lure Yoongi in. It rammed into him, and Yoongi gasped as all his air twirled out of his body. He glided through the air before his back hit the terrain. Ache shot up his bones, his eyes half-closed. His irises stared up at the sky, his breathing coming out jagged. The monster bellowed a victory cry. Like it recognized Yoongi. Yoongi knew it wasn't true, and it was only his imagination, but for a moment, he thought the creature left him alive all that time ago just to torture him. To finish him now.

The mammoth ahead dialed down from its victory, swiveling around to return to the mainland and disintegrate what was left of Shadowcrest. Yoongi failed again. Only this time, Shadowcrest would suffer the consequences. Innocent people that Yoongi once again couldn't protect. He was a walking curse, and the blood falling off his skin was symbolic of that. With no options left, Yoongi allowed his hand to let go of his sword, and his eyes shut.
