Axel and Toby a mile in silence; neither wanted to start the conversation. A pick-up truck drove past them and Toby sighed, stopping and going into the ditch. "This whole thing is just so fucked", Toby said, finally as Axel turned around and looked at his friend. "None of this should have happened", Axel said, "I shouldn't have brought the acid". "It's not your fault", Toby said, snapping a branch off a tree, "We didn't know Holden would react like that". "Still though", Axel said, "I shouldn't have done it. I can't stop thinking about the cop". Toby threw the stick into the other trees and just began to scream. "It won't stop playing over and over in my head", he admitted, "The looks in their eyes. The bodies going over the car. The police. It won't stop". "We can't even let it out in a healthy way either", Axel said, picking up a rock and throwing it across the empty road, "We can't tell anyone and if we go to a therapist we'll just be seen as weirdos. It's all so fucked". "I agree entirely", Toby said, "We just have to wait out the ride and see what happens to Holden. The news and papers are all over this thing". "I just want to dig a hole and lie in it, never coming out", Axel said, tears forming in his eyes, "Everything is fucked".
The two boys continued walking in silence and made it to the next town over and they felt more out of place there as every newspaper stand they passed had Holden's face on it or carnage from the crash. "I feel so sick, man", Axel said as they walked into, 'Jans Convenience Store', looking for Pepsi. "Tell me about it", Toby said, finding the fridge and getting two Pepsis. The woman behind the counter looked at them and gave a look of disgust. "What do you boys think of that horrific teen?", she asked, ringing them up for $2. "God awful", Toby answered, giving the woman two one-dollar bills, "Absolutely horrible". "Some kids have been calling a saviour because he killed a cop", she said, shaking her head, "What has the world come to, eh?". Axel went very ple and rushed outside as he thought he would be sick. "Thank you, ma'am", Toby said before turning on his heels and following Axel. Toby found his friend at the back of the store throwing up. "I can't cope", Axel said, crying, "A fucking hero? What the fuck?!". Toby put the drinks on the ground and pulled his friend into a tight hug. They needed each other more than ever.
