I awake to the door closing, and a plate of food being placed into my lap. A waft of pancakes, bacon, and such was placed into a plate. Freshly cooked, yet still managing to look processed.
"I'm guessing.. hotel food?" I teased, grabbing a plastic fork covered in grease, digging into the eggs. They were slightly plasticity, yet had the flavors I wanted. Kokichi laid at the end of the bed, sipping a soda.
"They have complimentary breakfast, so I took the option." He snatched a bacon piece from my plate, before digging his hand into a Styrofoam bowl of off-brand cereal.
"Well, when do we turn up to the restaurant, Shu?"
I checked my phone, seeing the time. "Well in about 4 hours. We can go shopping around any known districts or malls.. or go back to sleep."
Kokichi bit the second idea for a bit, before shaking his head and slamming my sheets off. I stabbed my pancakes, rolling my eyes. Prepared for his hysterics, as always.
"Nope, time to get up! Awaken, sleepy beast! Or else I'll get you!" He shouted, shaking the bed as I burst out laughing. I choked on my pancake, waving my fork in the air as defeat.
"Please, just one moment to eat in peace!"
Then his phone rang. Kokichi smirked, grabbing it before turning to the bathroom. The last thing he said was, "for now, detective."
I felt the urge to listen in, and I know it was stupid. I'm a grown adult, and I'm not in love with Kokichi. But the curiosity settled in, and I had to. Which was never good reasoning.
"Yeah, it's confirmed. He doesn't like me, RanRan. When can I see you again?"
... did he hear what I said about him kissing me? Oh god..
"I know paparazzi is on your ass, but at least once in my apartment. I need you."
I decided to leave after that, after hearing enough. Clearly Kokichi didn't need me, if his mind was so busy on him.
I waited for Kokichi to come back out, and mentioned a popular shopping mall. He brightened up at the idea, and now here we were.
Running through a busy mall, pointing out stores we recognize, and running into interesting ones. Kokichi would show me a shirt, and gushed about it. If he tried it on, I'd compliment the same. We ate at the food court, some fast food that Kokichi gobbled in 4 seconds. At some point, I even got matching bracelets for both of us, which instantly made the workers coo over us.
When I witnessed the reaction, I realized that.... this sort of was a date.
But why didn't I mind it?
Once it was time, we stepped upon the restaurant. It was a typical JapCafe style cafe, an old woman behind the counter serving tea with wrinkles forming a happy face. The smell of tea wafted throughout the tea house, as sweets stood in display behind a counter, bright and colorful.
The woman welcomed us, sitting down upon request. I held up a screenshot of Kaito, eyeing her. "Do you have any idea who this is, Ma'am?"
She lit up almost immediately, nodding to me. "Why, yes! He helps around the house, you see.... do you want any tea for the young couple? And might I say, you have lovely yellow eyes. So sharp for a young man!"
I felt my face flush at the compliment, looking away. I tried to stay professional, yet Kokichi didn't help matters.
"I know right? They're so illuminatin' to look at! And yes, I'd like some tea. Surprise me!"
I coughed a bit, shaking my assistant off me as I placed my phone back. "When does Kaito arrive?"
The woman stood, shakily. She shrugged, going behind the counter with her cane. "I'm guessing you two are his friends. Well, he's coming by soon. Be my guest."
I turned to my asisstant, who seemed careless as always. Even when moments ago, he was locked next to an assassin. Saw a dead body, and was near death. Under all of that excitement, why was he so calm? I get being calm under pressure... but there's more to Kokichi then I knew.
I just wasn't sure how to ask. How to press him further. Any time I did, he'd shoot a white lie at me, further building his wall against mine. I almost admired his admission of fearlessness, however....
In some parts, it worried me. I was worried for him.
I didn't notice my hand slip to his side until he flinched, glancing at me. "Well well well, trying to hit on your co-worker?"
"N-no, I just... I need to know. How are you so calm?"
Kokichi leaned towards me, playing on his phone. "Well it's my job, Shu."
I guess I'll never know, at least not until now..
...
"BAASAN! I brought you the sweet bread, like you suggested!" A tall, burly man stomped in. His whole outfit space themed from the waist down, however he seemed more like an excited puppy then a tough, scary man. He stomped through the Cafe, as multiple woman called out to him and waved hello.
He handed over the huge box with no sweat, standing tall and wiping dust off his shoulder. The old lady came to hug him, before grabbing his ear and whispering to it. She pointed to us, a big smile on her face.
Kaito then glanced at us, eyes wide. "I have friends?"
Kokichi burst out laughing, and I slapped his shoulder embarrassed. God, in my old days... my uncle would have kicked me personally out the restaurant if I spoke up.
Kaito then sat down across from us, if his eyes were any more excited, I'd see stars in them. His gauntly presence was enough, and I found myself tucking my hat and sighing.
"So, Kaito. How are you today?"
My asisstant leaned in the counter, keeping an eye at my questioning. Admiration at how quick I switched.
"I'm good!!! Yeah, the usual, studying to be an astronaut!"
"That's great, just great. Do you remember high school?"
Kaito switched, looking away. He sratched the nape of his neck, voice going low. "...Is this about Maki?"
I smiled, a selfish, proud one. "Yes, it is. We are part of the trio of detectives that, somehow, met arms with her. We believe you, Kaito. And we're lead to believe that with your help, the more info we can find. We had an address of her base, but she's on the run now.
We need you to help find her, is there any locations you visited? Any potential hideouts?"
"You better listen to the boss, biggie. Else he can snap your astronaut carrer in half." Kokichi lied effortlessly, watching Kaito cower now.
"U-uhm.... okay! I'm glad you believe me, for real! Nobody did, not even my parents. This is so cool, being in front of detectives! And his little sidekick."
Kokichi glared, pouting now. "Hey!"
Kaito grabbed my hand, shaking it. "Kaito Momota! Ultimate Astronaut, the buff guy who will be your best friend! Come with me, I'll show you some old high school stuff me and Maki had!"
He stood up, tall and strong. I turned to my asisstant, who playfully rolled his eyes and went along with it.
Why is it that everybody I talk to, always seems to drag me somewhere?
