The sounds of the hospital didn't seem to bother me as I leaned into Mitch Grassi, one of my best friends. My shirt was soaked with tears from where I had been crying. A tremor swept through my body, and Mitch's brown eyes were filled with terror and concern. Mitch just simply held me close, and he watched the scenes of the hospital unfold. He glanced down at my trembling body and sighed sadly as he looked back up. One of my other best friends, Scott Hoying, was up at the nurse's station getting information about another of my best friends, Kirstin Maldonado. Kirstin had been brutally injured by someone we had no idea who. You could easily see that Scott was agitated even from where Mitch and I were sitting. Scott's blue eyes blazed with anger as he stalked back to us. Mitch was a little confused about why his best friend was so upset.
Mitch Grassi: Scott, what did they say?
Scott remained quiet as he sat down beside me. His blue eyes relaxed ever so slightly as he saw another tremor sweep through my body. Then he met Mitch's brown eyes. When Scott finally spoke, his voice was filled with distress and had a slight edge of anger.
Scott Hoying: We still can't go back, and only close friends and family are allowed to go back when we can go back, and supposedly Kailyn doesn't fit under those categories.
Mitch's brown eyes lit up with a fire fueled by another tremor in my body. He met Scott's blue eyes and saw that Scott had the same anger that he had.
Mitch: What? Can't they see how upset Kailyn is? She's the one who found Kirstin. Did they say how she was doing, at least?
Scott's blue eyes darkened as he solemnly shook his head. Tears welled up in his eyes as he pulled me into him. Sensing that it was Scott, I buried my head in his chest. Scott simply held me close as my body continued to tremble. Mitch looked up but kept my hand in his. The fire in Mitch's brown eyes died down as he watched the tremors slowly fade. He looked up when he heard footsteps and gently nudged Scott. I noticed that it was the doctor who had walked up to us. Instantly I feared the worst, Kirstin's gone.
Me: No! Please no.
Scott put me into Mitch's arms as Dr. Peters pulled him to the side. Scott's blue eyes were filled with agony as he shared my fear.
Dr. Peters: She's finally stable. The cut down her arm is incredibly deep, and it'll take a long time to heal. Also, she might not wake up for several days. She'll also have a scar around her neck once that heals. The rope had to be cut off because it was so tight. Her back, well, let's just say that it will be incredibly painful, so prepare yourself. The good news is that she isn't going to die unless something goes wrong. Her back will heal, though.
Scott relaxed ever so slightly; then, he turned to Mitch after hearing his friend call his name.
Scott: Mitch, what is it?
Mitch: Look at Kailyn's arm.
Scott walked over and gently picked it up. He gasped when he noticed that it didn't look right.
Scott: Dr. Peters! Can you come and look at this?
His voice was beginning to rise with worry. Scott's blue eyes were filled with sorrow and distress. He was incredibly worried about Kirstin.
Dr. Peters: Of course, Mr. Hoying.
Dr. Peters walked over and gently picked up my arm. He studied it, and then he looked up. Without saying anything to the boys, he called to the nurse's station, to ask if they would prepare a surgery room. Scott and Mitch were increasingly alarmed at what had just happened. Mitch held onto me but then allowed the nurses to move me to the transport bed gently. Scott followed the doctor but then reached out to stop him.
Scott: Doctor, what's going on? What's the matter with Kailyn's arm?
Dr. Peters: I know that you probably don't want to hear this right now, but the only way that we can understand what's wrong with Kailyn is to open the wound up and look inside it. Don't worry. She'll be fine.
Scott returned to Mitch's side and watched as they wheeled me into surgery. He sat down beside his friend, and together, they waited in silence. Mitch broke the silence, and his voice was low with concern.
Mitch: Scott, what if it's our fault? Maybe we should have called 911.
Scott remained silent for several heartbeats as he pondered what Mitch had just said. His blue eyes darkened as he sighed.
Scott: I don't know, Mitch.
The two boys fell into silence as they thought about all that happened to Kirstin and me. Then Scott looked up and Mitch met his friend's troubled blue gaze.
Scott: Mitch, if it is we can't change the past. The only thing that we can do is move on.
Suddenly a sound rose into the air, causing widespread panic and hurry. A nurse shouted: "It's room 309! Hurry!
Mitch and Scott jumped up before Scott ran to the nurse's station. His heart was racing as he tried to ask what was going on.
Scott: Excuse me but what's going on? What's wrong?
Clair Stevens: The patient in room 309 just went into cardiac arrest.
Scott: Wait who's in that room?
Clair sat down and quickly checked to see who it was. She looked up and Scott's heart dropped.
Clair: Room 309 is Kirstin Maldonado.
Scott's blue eyes filled with tears and he just fell to his knees. His fists clenched as he sat there on his knees as the noises of the hospital continued and the noise that signified what is happening. Mitch ran over and crouched down beside his mourning friend. He was confused because he had no idea what the nurse said.
Mitch: What's the matter, Scott?
Clair: Well he asked who was in room 309 and I replied with Kirstin Maldonado.
Mitch's brown eyes then filled with tears as he held onto Scott tighter. They feared that their best friend, Kirstin Maldonado, had just passed.
