My eyes fluttered open, and I noticed I was again in my room. It was dark outside, and I heard a noise that sounded like someone calling for help. It only took me a heartbeat to recognize the call. Kirstin! I jumped out of bed and ran to the door. The doorknob burnt my hand again, and I tried harder to break the door down. I must get to her! I cried silently as I continued to ram the door. Smoke started to seep under the door, making me cough. The smoke inhalation made my body weaken, so as I hit the door this time, it made me collapse. Joy pulsed through my weakened body as I heard Scott's voice: "She's out! Wait, where's Kailyn?" I suddenly realized that they had rescued Kirstin but hadn't even checked my room. My heart dropped as I heard Mitch's high-pitched voice cry out: "Scott, no!" Scott? Oh no! He was coming to get me! I wanted to cry out to him to forget about me, but I knew better. It would result in nothing but failure and loss. I then could hear the crackle of the flames as they whipped around me. Soon I could hear footsteps outside the door and a voice that said: "Kailyn? Are you in there?" I pounded on the door before I lost consciousness. The door was kicked open, and Scott rushed in and fell to his knees when he saw my burnt, limp body. "Kailyn!" cried Scott. He gently picked me up, careful not to cause more pain than I had already. As he stepped out into the hall, a beam fell onto him, and somehow I snapped into consciousness to see him trapped beneath the flaming beam. I struggled to my feet and rushed over to him, ignoring the burning pain caused by my attempt to lift the beam off him. I got it lifted slightly and, surprisingly, was able to get his limp body from beneath the beam. I took a deep breath to cry out, but then I felt that Scott's body was surprisingly cool with being in a fire. With a jolt, I realized that the reason behind that was that he was dead. I cried out in pure agony: "Scott!" I then saw that search and rescue crews had made it to us, and one of them picked me up. I fought as tears that made my eyes burn flowed down my face as I cried out again in agony. As we got out, I could feel the cooler air, and then I lost all strength in my body and gave up. I quit fighting, and I saw Mitch staring at the burning fire. He rushed up to me and asked the guy carrying me: "Where's Scott?" The worker responded dryly: "He's dead." Mitch cried out in agony as he was suddenly alone. I could see that there were tear stains on his face and shirt. He muttered: "That's two of us gone." I gasped, which only made me cough before I forced the guy to drop me, but Mitch caught me.
