Now, most people would tell their best friend about their crush, but not Kim. Kim knew that if she told Sam she'd never hear the end of it. And even worse Sam might tell Rodrick and she didn't want that.
She thought about telling Joaquin but she wasn't sure she trusted him anymore. After all, he pretty much told Sam about her crush on Rodrick. Except for the reason that made her stop talking to him. Given the rate Joaquin was going at Kim wouldn't be surprised if he told Sam by lunch.
So it was decided. Kim wouldn't tell anyone about her crush on Rodrick. As long as she stayed on neutral topics and didn't think about Rodrick for extended amounts of time she'd be fine.
"So how was tutoring Rodrick yesterday?" Sam asked at lunch.
Kim froze. "It was fine." She replied stiffly.
"Yeah? Nothing awkward or weird happened?" Joaquin asked.
"Of course not. Why would it?"
Joaquin shrugged. "I don't know. Just making conversation."
Kim relaxed. However, Sam looked suspicious.
"Are you sure? You seem a little tense." Said Sam.
Kim smiled and shook her head. "I'm fine really. I just tutored him. Nothing happened."
Sam nodded. "Good." Then she turned back to her food.
Kim let out a sigh of relief. The rest of the lunch period seemed to be going fine until Rodrick came up to their table.
"Hey, Kim. How's it going?" Rodrick said.
Kim could feel herself get a little pink. "I'm fine."
"Are you sure? You left in kind of a hurry yesterday. I didn't even get a chance to thank you."
Kim gave him a surprised look. "Thank you?"
Rodrick nodded. "Yeah, I wanted to say thank you. Because of you I kinda understand what the teachers are talking about. Not very much but kinda."
"Oh," Kim said. "It's not a big deal."
"Well, it is to me," Rodrick said. "So thank you."
Kim nodded. "You're welcome."
Then there was a moment of silence where Rodrick didn't go away. He knew he should but he didn't want to for some reason. Eventually, things got awkward and Joaquin had enough.
"Do you need anything else?" He asked.
Rodrick blinked. "No, I don't think so."
"Then, and I mean this is the nicest way, why are you still here?"
Rodrick blushed embarrassed. "Right. Sorry I'll be going now." He turned to Kim. "I guess I'll see you later."
"I guess you will," Kim replied.
Then Rodrick turned around and went back to his friends. As soon as he was out of earshot, Sam looked at Kim with an eyebrow raised.
"Nothing happened, huh?" Sam said.
"Yes!" Kim insisted. "Nothing happened! Why would you think something happened?"
"First of all your face is red," Sam stated. "Second of all, he came over here to thank you even though he could have waited until your tutoring session today. And finally, he didn't want to leave."
"What are you talking about?" Kim asked.
"C'mon. Did you not see how he acted after he said thank you. He could have left right away, but he didn't. Instead, he stayed and just stared at you while you stared right back." Sam explained.
