News that Kim and Rodrick were dating spread rather quickly around the school. Most people didn't care. Some people were shocked that two people who were such opposites got together. Sam and Joaquin were both very happy for them.

"I can't believe it! You two are together!" Sam cried when she found out.

"Now we can stop obsessing over your relationship and focus on us," Joaquin said.

"I still don't get why you were obsessing over our relationship, to begin with," Kim said.

"Me neither!" Joaquin told her. And the subject was dropped.

So everyone went on living their lives and not getting involved with other people's love lives. And soon it was time for Manny's birthday party and Kim was still going with Rodrick, except instead of going with him as friends she would be going as his date.

Since the party was going to be at Corny's, Kim asked her mother if she could drop her off at the Heffleys' house. She wanted to spend a little time with Rodrick before the actual party. Her mother agreed.

Kim showed up at the Heffley residence wearing a white sundress with blue flowers on it. She also bought a present for Manny that she hoped he liked.

When she rang the doorbell she heard quite the communion behind the door. She assumed that they were fighting about who would answer the door and let Kim in. In the end, Rodrick opened the door with a smile.

"Hey, you're here." He said breathlessly. "And you look great."

"Thanks." She smiled and lifted the present. "A little something for the birthday boy."

"Just for the birthday boy?" Rodrick asked, pretending to be disappointed. "There's nothing for me?"

Kim rolled her eyes and kissed him. "There. Happy?" She asked when she pulled away.

His smile grew bigger. "Very."

Another voice that didn't come from Kim or Rodrick spoke up. "Hello, Kim. It's good to see you again."

Kim turned to see Rodrick's mother and father standing nearby. She smiled and then came forward to greet them.

"It's good to see you again Mr. Heffley. Mrs. Heffley."

"I'm so glad you could make it." Mrs. Heffley said, pulling Kim into a hug. Kim returned it.

"Well, once Rodrick asked me to come I knew I had to. I just couldn't say no to him." Kim said.

Mr. Heffley smiled. "I'm just glad that he won't be alone at this party. It's not exactly like going to a toddler's birthday party is going to be fun for him."

"Then why are you making me go?" Rodrick said. "Maybe I shouldn't go. Leave me and Kim behind and we can just hang out at home."

"You want us to leave you alone in our house with a girl?" Mr. Heffley asked.

"Sure! Why not?" Rodrick said, thinking he still had a chance.

"Because then you'll be alone, with a girl in our house."

"You didn't think that was going to work, did you?" Mrs. Heffley asked.

"A guy can hope, can't he?"

Kim rolled her eyes. "Don't worry Mrs. Heffley. We wouldn't miss it for the world."

"I'm glad to hear it." Mrs. Heffley smiled and left the room. Mr. Heffley followed but not before giving them a warning look.

When the two were all alone Rodrick turned to Kim. "So we got a little while before the party starts. What do you want to do?"
