As far back as he can remember, steve always thought that he was straight. When he was in highschool he was the most popular which meant that he also became the most desirable.

What he hasn't known was that that didn't necessarily mean just the affection of the ladies, it caught a few mens attention as well. He ignored it for the four years that he had to deal with being nicknamed "king steve". He hated that nickname, reminded him far too much of his highschool years. He let out a sigh of relief as he opened the door to Family Video, seeing robin always made his day so much better.

"steve!!! god you're an hour late!!" she looked stressed, sitting on the edge of the counter on the phone while she looked at him like he had just killed her whole family.

"geez sorry rob, I...slept in?" that was a lie, and it sounded like a lie so robin winced when he said it

"sure sure whatever, can you go grab all the new releases and put them up i'm a little busy here?" she motioned to the phone, and steve could hear a lady yelling on the other side so he mouthed good luck to her and walked away. all of the new releases were in two boxes, it wouldn't take him all that long to set them up but that didn't mean he wanted to do it.

if he was going to be completely honest with himself, he hadn't been thinking straight the entire year. ever since what happened march of 1986 he's been all rattled in the head. maybe it was just the demobat scars that haunted him, or the way the group came to save him or...or

"here, be modest" eddie's denim vest hit steve's chest with a thud. he hadn't hesitated to put it on, realizing that it smelt like cheap cologne and weed and steve took it to memory that he never wanted to forget that scent. the whole night the two were glued at the hip, even though eddie was pushing steve to get back with nancy. said it was "and unambiguous sign of true love" well that was bullshit. him and nancy had been over for years, and although nancy dived to save him first..she wasn't the one making him laugh right now. he made some stupid little ozzy joke, at the time steve didn't understand at all. but now....

now steve had a black sabbath cassette playing on repeat on his walkman. robin endlessly made fun of him for it, asking him why he even liked it since it was never really his speed before. this particular day he was missing eddie like crazy, he really didn't understand. why had they been so close just for them to get so distant over the past year? the last time steve and eddie had even talked was at graduation. steve remembered every second of that day, when eddie got his diploma he flipped the principal off just like he said he would and the wide smile on his face was hard to forget. he had hugged steve so tight he almost knocked him over, and steve could've sworn he had never seen him that happy before.

but...then eddie moved, his uncle packed up and forced them to move across town and steve never saw him again after that. he couldn't lie and say it didn't hurt, because it genuinely did. whether it was just missing the little group they had, or maybe more. he didn't want to admit that to himself, hadn't steve always liked women? he was snapped out of his thoughts when he dropped a tape, and robin laughed so hard at how steve jumped.
"steve what? you looked like you've seen a ghost"
"what no! i'm fine, just a little shaken up, that's all"

and then "robin how did you know you liked girls?" she sat next to him with her legs crossed with an indescribable look on her face. "excuse me?" she laughed, so hard that it made steve sound defense when he responded "you heard me"

"oh! oh you're serious? well it's something i've always sort of known, it's been a part of me since as far back as i can remember. you remember the whole speech i gave you in the mall, it was that simple"

"but what if it's not simple" he sounded distressed, running a hand through his hair as he shut off his walkman. "i'm not..supposed to like guys though robin. i like women! i've been trying to get a girlfriend ever since we started working here...but"

she playfully punched him in the shoulder, just to mess with him "ohhhhh my god!!! steve you do know you can be bisexual right? you can like both. hell, you can have both. who wouldn't want you? i would besides....the being lesbian and all that, if you were a girl i would totally think you're smokin' hot" at that steve laughed so hard it hurt and he forgot for the moment all of his troubles.

the rest of the day was quiet, during their lunch break dustin and the other kids to talk about their new d&d campaign they would be starting once school started up again in a few days. but in the middle of dustin's rant, steve was able to hear him say "i miss eddie though, he came up with the best campaigns he helped with the new one" and that struck a nerve. he had figured dustin was probably still hanging out with eddie, but hearing it made it more real. it made it hurt more, it was no longer the jealousy of steve wanting to be "the best babysitter". his jealousy was misplaced, he missed the sound of eddie's voice and even if he had to hear his stupid little nerdy rants that would be better than not hearing from him at all. he interrupted dustin's rant, hugging him and the other kids before they left "alright alright henderson, go play your b&d"

dustin laughed, hugging steve one more time "it's d&d, steve, d&d" the rest of the kids were already outside as dustin ran after them. steve watched them bike away, wondering how they all went back to being so happy after all the things they had been through the past few years. robin was grabbing her bag, just about to head out the door when the phone rang. "steve can you get that!! i'm about to leave, don't want to get caught up with another angry customer" she laughed, mumbling something about going to see nancy later but she stayed just long enough to see what all the fuss was with the phone right before they closed.

he rolled his eyes, picking up the phone with a sigh "family video is about to close, but if you call back tomorrow and ask for steve i can assist you th-"

but he was cut off by a very excited voice on the other side, and the sound of the other person dropping their phone
"harrington!!! god am i glad to hear your voice, you free tonight? hellooooo?"

the shock on steves face was enough to get robin to stay and listen.
