Chapter 22: Sports Festival

Kanna: I'm home!

Tohru: Oh, welcome back Kanna!

Tohru said as she sat cradled up in my arms as the two of us watched whatever was on the TV, for my knee's felt weak, my arms were heavy, and my sister laid out on the couch like a plate of spaghetti. The two of us had survived the morning work shift, which was crushing in all senses. Though, that apparent fact was unknown to the small dragon girl as she set down her backpack and trotted over with a flyer in her hands.

Kanna: Ms. Kobayashi! Mr. Kobayashi! Look!

Kobayashi: What is it Kanna?

My sister asked, rolling her head over to look at the sheet of paper before her, though after a few seconds of looking at it, my sister frowned and looked into the girls' eyes.

Kobayashi: Oh, I'm sorry Kanna, but we have to work that day.

Kanna: W-what?

She said, Kanna's eyes going wide as she turned to me, holding up the paper as I saw why my sister had turned her down. The school was hosting the sports festival on a day we were scheduled to work, and with just today's work being the beginning of something far worse, I shook my head sadly towards her.

Kanna: B-but, can't you take a day off for me?

She said, shifting her attention back to my sister as she shook her head again. Though Kanna didn't take this lying down and started gently pushing my sister's side and began to plead with her softly, my sister would not let up every time. It eventually got to the point that Tohru got out of my lap and had to place a hand on the young dragon's shoulder.

Tohru: Kanna, F/N and Ms. Kobayashi are in the middle of their death marches and on the verge of facing Hades. Please let them be.

Kanna: No!

She said as sternly as possible. Tohru let out a soft sigh while putting her hands on her hips.

Tohru: Come on Kanna, what's so special about this 'sports festival' anyway?

Kanna: It's a day where you train alongside allies to defeat strong opponents.

Kobayashi: That isn't the best description of it.

She said, Kanna huffing a bit as she moved over to me and gently started to pull on one of my arms.

Kanna: Come on, defeat Hade's faster so you can watch me, pleeeease.

Tohru: Kanna, please give it up. I mean, I'll come and watch no matter what.

She said joyfully, though it quickly soured as Kanna gave her a bored look. With her eyebrow twitching, Tohru picked up Kanna and pinched her cheek.

Tohru: Oh, what am I now, chop liver?

Kanna: No, but Riko said that our parents would come to watch us, and you're like my big sister, but Ms. Kobayashi is like a mom.

F/N: Um, then what am I in this analogy?

I said, slightly worried about which context she would take her answer while turning her head to look at me.

Kanna: Big brother.

F/N: Oh, thank God, though to be fair to her, my sister isn't old enough to be your mom.

Kobayashi: Yeah, but again some of our classmates already have kids. Either way, I'm sorry, but you'll have to make do with Tohru.

She said, flipping herself onto her back as she looked at Kanna, the girl growing a scowl as she turned away and stormed off to her room.
