"Chrissy, my name isn't actually Peter Ballard."
———
I walked down the hall, fiddling with the ring I planned to give Peter once we reached our regular meeting spot.
Can't say I'm not nervous, although I'm not sure why. It's just a ring, a simple thank you gift for his truthfulness towards me over the past few months. Nothing more, nothing less.
Still, no mater how hard I try to shake the feeling, I can't help but feel apprehensive.
Despite my nerves, I walk into the boiler room without hesitation. Diving head first into unfamiliar waters.
To my surprise, he is already here, leaning against the wall.
His head snaps up at my entering, he seems more on edge than he usually is, "Hey."
"Hello." He says. This interaction is much more awkward than usual.
Deciding to do my best to break free of the awkwardness suffocating us, I say, "Merry Christmas."
He raises an eyebrow, "It's Christmas?"
I nod, "Yup, December twenty fifth."
He mouthed the word "oh". I could see that my saying that was quite bittersweet for him. It would be for me too. I mean the man probably hasn't had a Christmas since he was a child.
"I, um-" I was really starting to feel the nerves now, "I got you something."
He's visibly taken aback by this. I doubt someone has gotten him something in years.
Peter opens his mouth to say something, but before he can I take the ring off and shove it in his direction.
"I wasn't sure what your ring size was so I just guessed."
Without saying a word he takes it and holds it in the palm of his hand for a moment, inspecting it.
His silence makes me nervous, so I speak up, "I wanted to get you a thank you gift for your honestly towards me for the entirety of when we've known each other..."
At my words he swallows, before easing my nerves by slipping the ring onto his left index finger.
He continues to just stare at it on his hand, not saying a word.
"It's stupid I know-"
His head immediately snaps up, "Don't say that."
His azure eyes search mine, at that moment I realise why I found such comfort in the blue paint.
I understand why it made me feel safe.
"Thank you." He says.
I nod, "It's no problem."
