I look around the dinning hall as the chattering from the campers fills the room. After dinner we'll take them back to their cabins and in an hour it'll be lights out for them. Camp's been in session for about two weeks now and it's the same as it's always been.
I spot Emma at one of the tables chatting up a group of girls while Jacob makes eyes at her like a love sick puppy dog. He had a thing for her the moment they were introduced to each other. Kaitlyn and Ryan were on the other side of the lunchroom chatting. Well, Kaitlyn's doing most of the talking and Ryan's just nodding.
Abigail is basically hiding away in a corner, shyly keeping an eye on her tables while Dylan and Nick stand around joking with each other. The brunette is the closest thing I have to a best friend. We met as campers way before becoming counselors. Dylan's friends with my siblings too. The sound of fast footsteps catches my attention and I look down just in time to see three boys racing past me.
"Hey! No running," I call to them and they immediately slow down. "Sorry, Andrew!" Sam calls to me before walking away with his friends. I shake my head with a chuckle of amusement. "Kids, man," I murmur to myself and lean back against my chair, scanning my tables to make sure no ones throwing food or anything.
I pull my phone out of my pocket, Dad let's me keep it. I think he overcompensates a lot for the terrifying childhood I experienced. He feels the need to make up for it now. I mean, it wasn't his fault. If anything it was Caleb, Kaylee, and I's fault. They were my big siblings I was just going along with whatever they wanted to do.
We didn't realize the horrible mistake we were about to make. I shake my head before my brain could go down memory lane and instead input my password before opening my calendar. I have every full moon marked for the full year. I always get really nervous when the full moon is close. I know what it means.
My siblings will lock themselves up while the rest of my family goes running through the woods in search of a white wolf. The white wolf. The one that infected half my family with its disease. I'm the only sibling that's still human and my dad is adamant about keeping it that way.
I'm not allowed inside grandma's house or the woods when the moon is full. I'm to stay inside no matter what. Dad has been pushing me toward college since I decided what I wanted to do with my life. He wants me as far away as possible, safe, human. Grams doesn't want me to go. She wants me to stay along with my other siblings.
She loves us very much, but I can't stay here. I'm terrified all the time. Everytime that moon comes out my heart races and my anxiety threatens to overwhelm me. I don't want to become a monster and I don't want to end up getting killed by the people I love. All it takes is one mistake, one slip up, and I'm cursed forever or worse dead.
Which is why I worked my ass off to get a scholarship to my school of choice. After camp's over I'm packing up and counting the days till I leave home and go to college. I hope they find that Silas guy and I hope my family can be saved, but I won't be here while they search endlessly for a guy that's been missing for six whole years.
The next full moon isn't for a few weeks. I put my phone away and return to surveying the room. Eventually, my eyes spot Randall who looks like he's having a bad day. I get up from my chair and make my way over to the morose camper. Once I reach him I place my hand on his shoulder and the thirteen year old looks up at me.
"Mind taking a walk with me?" He gets up and I lead him back over to my chair. "What's going on, Randy? Why do you look so upset?" He gives me a one sided shrug and I give him a look of disbelief. "C'mon, Randall. What's wrong? You can tell me. I'm not going to judge you."
