"Oh, my baby!" I'm embraced tightly by my mother and hug her back with my good arm. "You just saw me yesterday," I remind her as a big smile graces my face at her fussing. After such a horrible experience at Hackett's Quarry it's nice to have something constant. And my loving mother is exactly what I need.
"The surgery went well and he's recovered nicely. We've removed the stitches and everything seems to be in order," my doctor speaks up and she pulls away from me to look at him. He's holding my hospital chart in his hands and is smiling politely. "Well, I hope he was on his best behavior during his recovery."
She fixes me with a pointed look and I chuckle along with Doctor Greyson. "Your son was a breeze compared to some of my other patients. And he's been remarkably upbeat considering what he's been through. Hopefully, his mood will stay that way. It's very easy to get discouraged when you've suffered a loss of a limb."
"Yeah, well the morphine helped," I joke and look down at the fresh gauze covering my stump. "So can I take him home now?"
"Of course. We've given him some papers on what to do as well as some exercises. I've been told that you've also been brought up to speed so he's free to go. Just need you to sign the release forms. I'll be right back." He dismisses himself and I look back up at my mom when she makes a noise.
"My poor boy!" She cups my cheek and gazes down at me sadly so I playfully swat her hand away. "I'm fine, Mom."
"Your hand was cut off! How is that fine?!" It's not, but I don't need to be reminded of it everytime you see me. "Let's just not talk about it. Please," I ask her and she nods in understanding. "Okay, sweetheart. Okay. I'm just glad you're home."
She hugs me again and I let her. "How's Andrew?" I ask as she pulls away. Both Hackett brothers have been staying with us since they can't really go home cause... Chris is gone. My mother was kind enough to let them stay with us. "Well, he's started coming out of your room a little bit more. But I think he's missed you."
I've been in the hospital for three weeks recovering from my surgery and talking with a number of people about my life now that my hand is gone. How to take care of it and to handle the pain etcetera. I just can't wait to be back home and see Andrew. He lost quite a lot back at the camp. His sister and his father.
It's taken a toll on him, but he's trying. "Alright, here you go." I look over as Doctor Greyson enters the room handing my mother the paperwork. "Just sign these and you're good to go. Now remember to take care of yourself and call us if anything happens. Swelling, pus, wounds reopen, fever, or chills. Alright?"
"Will do, doc," I tell him as my mom signs her signature before handing them back to him. "Let's get you home!" She beams and I smile back as I get off the hospital bed, following her through the building and out into the parking lot. My mom speaks excitedly as we walk to her car.
Once it's unlocked I open it and slip inside, closing the door behind me. She gets in beside me and I buckle my seatbelt. I rub at my eyes as she starts the car and begins pulling out of the lot. "You okay, honey?"
"Yeah. Just tired is all." She turns the radio up a little and I watch the passing scenery. I had a couple nightmares during my stay in the hospital so I haven't been sleeping well. I look down at my arm and decide to practice one of the physical therapy things they asked me to do. It's suppose to help reduce phantom pain.
My pain killers have been doing their job, but I just figured I'd give it a go so it's easier. I imagine my left hand flexing the fingers and moving my wrist. As if it were still there. The way the doctors explained it, it's like my brain doesn't realize my hand is gone so it's still sending signals to the missing limb which can cause pain to flare up in that area.
