"No, we totally get it. You don't wanna disappoint daddy," Jacob jibes and I can see Andrew was starting to get pissed off. Ever since the van wouldn't work I could tell he was getting tenser and tenser with each minute that went by. He's afraid of something I just don't know what it is.
"Yeah, well someone's gotta give a shit!" Andrew scoffs and shakes his head and I'm about to step in when dumbass opens his mouth, not knowing when to keep it shut. "Aww." He flips the jock off and gives him a withering glare. "Fuck you, dude! Do whatever the fuck you want. See if I care."
He turns his back on Jacob who continues to taunt him. "Boooo!"
"Lay off, Jake," I snap at him with a warning tone as my best friend storms toward the stairs with clenched fists at his sides. "Andrew, wait. Come on, man." He ignores my attempts to call him back and disappears into the lodge, slamming the door shut behind him.
I sigh and drop my head as worry floods me. First Chris starts freaking out and now Andrew's acting strange. Well, stranger than he normally acts. I know that Mr. H overcompensates when it comes to his children because of what happened six years ago. But I also know that Andrew does the same thing when it comes to being his son.
He tries to make up for his mistake by doing exactly what his father asks of him. He doesn't want to let him down again and of course Jacob wouldn't understand where Andrew's coming from so his words hit a nerve with the anxiety riddled brunette. I know one thing next time Jacob goes after Andrew like that I might just have to deck him myself.
"Alright, alright, alright, Hacketteers! Party planning Committee. Let's do this!" I turn back around as Jacob starts barking orders. "Um, okay. First things first. Nick and Abi… you go get some firewood. Uh… Emma and I will go to the store for some supplies." Dude, if you were anymore transparent you'd be see through.
Men become real idiots when a girl is involved. Glad I'll never know that feeling. "And, uh, Dylan," Jake calls my name breaking me from my thoughts and I glance at him with a neutral expression. I've always been protective of Andrew and now that I know all the truly horrible things he went through when he was younger the urge to shield him, like I did when we were younger, has gotten stronger.
Kids can be mean, especially at thirteen, and Andrew could barely tie his own shoes let alone defend himself against bullies. He was a bundle of raw nerves when I first met him. If he didn't hear you come up behind him and you startled him he'd practically jump out of his skin. And on certain nights when the moon was bright he'd just completely freak out.
In the beginning, on those nights he'd just stay up, looking like he was about to meet the devil himself. As the summer went on he got better, but he would still get fidgety and anxious on certain nights. The poor boy was just traumatized and the only thing I could do was offer support and stay up with him. I couldn't really comfort him in those instances, but I damn well could do something about the bullies.
Now we're older and I know Andrew doesn't need me to protect him anymore, but it doesn't change the fact that I still feel the urge to do so. Nothing will ever change that. "You just… I don't know, figure out how to charge the phones or something…" That would require getting into Mr. H's office and I can't do that without the keys, which are with Andrew.
"Alright, let's do this!" I turn and quickly jog up the steps, entering the lodge to look for Andrew to make sure he's okay. Obviously, he'd pick a place where the others wouldn't think to look for him, but hopefully a place where he knew I'd go to find him. Just for the hell of it I go to the bathroom, where we were last.
I grab and turn the knob, pushing the door open. Unfortunately, no Andrew. I go back to the main entrance and look around, trying to think of where he'd go. "Marco," I call out and don't really expect a response. I rub my neck feeling stupid and concerned.
