"You tortured people without me?" I ask, actually a little bit hurt. Does that make me screwed up? Probably. I liked making people talk about as much as I liked a gun fight, which is a lot more then I should. There's just something so empowering in making a big strong man cry and beg.
Adam raises a brow at my tone and Mato rubs my shoulder. "I'll get you in on the next round."
That perked me up a little and Adam shakes his head. "The information we got enlightened us, they had a small team out gathering some new stuff. They don't know if the team had gotten back that night or not. So when you get back to the settlement.."
"They could be there." I fill in for him. "Or they could have taken shit and run, or they could be waiting to see if we go back for it."
"Exactly, it could be dangerous to go back plus, one of them said they were trading with another group a few hours away. Guns, drugs, women and children." Adam tells me and I nod, because of course they would, of course there's more groups like that. Bad man will take advantage of the situation, no cops, no military men to stop them. All they had to do was avoid military run outposts. That wouldn't be to hard.
"All we have to do is find them, we can kill them off once we do."
"Just like that?" Adam questions me. "Just go in and kill them?"
"Is that not what we did yesterday?" I question back. "If we come across a group of civilians and they don't want to join us that's fine, we can be friendly with them. But if we come across a group that's abusing their women and children, they can die."
"I don't disagree." Mato says from behind me.
Adam rubs his hand over his face, he looks exhausted today. Dark circles under his eyes, stubble getting a little out of hand. He opens a drawer then pulls out a.. cell phone. "Here." He hands it to me over the desk and I take it. Its a chunky black phone, when I flip it open I look up to him surprised. "Yes, its a military grade phone. As long as the satellites are in the sky and you keep it charged it will work. The battery last a long time and the solar charger for the radios will work for it. I only have so many of these, so don't loose it."
"Emergency use only." Mato adds in. "Well keep it safe and on one of us at all times so if something happens we will always have contact."
"What I wanted to bring up before the meeting is what to do with the children." Adam says. "There is a threat of some of the men might still be out there, or in the camp. It could turn into a gun fight and I don't want the kids to be apart of that."
The idea of leaving the baby gave me anxiety, but the idea of getting ambushed with the baby in the car almost made me panic. I had to take a deep breath in before I answered. "We can go without the kids to start, wait two or three days to beef up the walls and get settled before we come back to get them." I think about it for a second. "Or we can keep a few here that we want to be apart of the new settlement, they can bring the kids up two or three days after we settle. That way we don't have to leave the new settlement."
"Do you think that will be enough time? Two or three days to see if they are around?" Adam asks and I shake my head.
"It will never be fully safe, there are zombies in the world now. Plus gangs will thrive in this world, all we can do is prepare for what ever threat to come and keep a eye on our surroundings." I can see the frown deepening on Adams face as I talk but I wasn't going to go easy on this. I wasn't going to lie and say everything will be sunshine and rainbows.
