Two more days pass, we of course gather and hoard more supplies, finishing the two gates that I wanted. We even had scaffolding up along the walls, simple roofs and thicker guard rails were being added to those. I had taken North's grandpa around the perimeter of where I wanted the final wall to be, he had looked happy to have a big project he could work on. North and a few others were out with him earlier, so he can check the stability of some of the areas and to take measurements.

We had picnic tables set up in the little cul de sac, with the little tent and couches it was a hang out spot where we also had set up grills. I have never had more grilled food in my life. We had also found smokers, those were going almost all of the time, drying meats for food storage. The freezers even though not working, if you kept it closed with the frozen food inside it had kept cool long enough for us to process all of it into something shelf stable, or gave us time to eat it. We did have a few generators, but we had decided to only hook up a few fridges in the daycare area along with the AC in there for the kids. Tyler had been in that utility building quite a lot, Bjorn or Milo and Ajax had all been apart of keeping him company, more like keeping him safe. Apparently he gets so engrossed in work he tunes everything else out. He also works so long he stays up so late he ends up sleeping past noon, like now.

Which is why Bjorn, Ajax and Milo are all here for lunch. In fact everyone was here for lunch except for Tyler, Blair and Emily. The latter of the two are patrolling the back gate, and yes one of the teens was patrolling. Mato, North and I had decided that it would be good for ALL them to learn the routes, to learn what to look out for and the call outs. The only person not to learn so far is Rachael who is in a wheel chair and can't get to some of the areas.

Sitting between Wyatt, and Sarah while holding Hunter in my arms feels so surreal. To be surrounded by a bunch of people who chat happily, feels so surreal. It feels so serene.

Until it doesn't.

Two gun shots ring out, the chatting dies immediately and everyone freezes in their spot. No one moves in inch, expect to look over where either Mato or I sit. Fear, because if it had been Blair she would have said so on the radio.

A voice from over the front gate rings through the silence. "This be us a'knockin!"

The accent is hick, a deep gravel to the voice and I can picture the type of man it belongs to so easily. One with a leather vest who may dawn a white hood from time to time. Fuck.

I look over to where Casey is with Dylan and a few others. I stand quickly grabbing Sarah's arm with one hand, I shove Hunter into Casey's arms, Sarah I stand next to her. Micah follows my lead, giving Theo to Dylan and I grab Casey's arm. "I want everyone who isn't a trained guard in the daycare. If someone comes inside who isn't apart of this community shoot them on sight."

"W-what?" Casey sounds a little shaken but she doesn't show it. She takes the kids and starts moving towards the daycare.

"Shoot. On. Sight." I punctuate every word. If someone managed to get in and try to get to the kids, I would hope someone would fucking shoot them.

Everyone else seems to burst into movement after the hesitation. Guns were in peoples hands, half of the group went to the daycare with all of the kids and the other half stayed, waiting orders.

"We don't have all day." I hear from over the gate and its accompanied by another gun shot. Mato's on his radio in an instant, telling Blair what's going on. At least we had her on the back entrance.

"Bjorn, Wyatt take the over head." Bjorn nods and grabs Wyatt to lead her over to the scaffolding. Both had taken to carrying a sniper rifle all the time, and right now I'm grateful. I think they both were the best snipers in our group.
